Title: Skin tags??
Post by: CloAndTheChins on May 08, 2016, 01:12:51 PM
Hi everyone

I noticed that my chin has two (that I can find) of what look like skin tags on the left hand side of her body.

I've searched the internet about skin tags on chinchillas and can only find limited information.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced this kind of thing with their chins and knows what it could be? I've posted a photo below.

They are only a few mm in size (so very small). In fact it's really hard to find them under all of her fur! I only noticed them because I thought she was scratching (which I now don't think she is), so checked her skin out.

Could they be something she's had forever and I've never noticed before? Or perhaps they have developed with age as she's 14 now.

Any help/advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks
Chloe

Wow, that's an old chinchilla.
My first thought is that these are nipples. Are they low on the animal around the belly? It's not apparent from the photo where they are located on the animal.

Thanks for the quick response. Yes she is getting on abit now!

I didn't think they were nipples because they're more on the side of her body than her belly... But thinking about it you could be right as they are lower down her body. I will check to see if she has the same on the other side, then I guess that will confirm whether they are nipples or not. They're very hard to find under all that fur!

Regarding elderly chins, it is not uncommon for chinchillas to age beyond twenty. Several chin owning friends have chinchillas in their late teens and early twenties still going strong, and ailing very little.

One of my chinchilla has a skin tag on her ear that looks very similar. If you are really worried about it you should see a vet. I have no knowledge of skin tags or what they mean. I've watched the one on my Chins ear since we have had her and it has never changed and she seems healthy so I am guessing it is nothing to worry about
