Title: Loud wheel
Post by: GandalftheFluffy on August 23, 2015, 08:29:24 AM
I bought a silent wheel or so I thought. It bounces all over the place and makes a loud noises every time my chinchilla runs. Does anybody have any advice on how to strap it down to make less noise or something?

What kind of wheel is it and what kind of cage do you have? It's hard to give you advice without more details

Hi,

Is it something along the lines of this...

I have this kind, I took it off the holder and attached it directly to the wire cage.  There isn't really a way to make it so it is silent (false advertising).  They become very loud and squeaky if you don't keep the spinning part clean.  I have had one break apart after a year, and with my starter cage before I built one they would run so hard in it that it broke each connecting part of the cage it was attached to.

That wheel is horrible fire a chin it's much too small and they squeak due to cheap parts not being made to handle dust. The wheel needs to be 14 inches diameter or larger. Any smaller and it forces the chin to run with abb arched back creating future problems

That is the biggest wheel I've ever seen in any pet store around here....

Pet stores carry little to nothing that is good for a chinchilla. Do a quick search on flying saucers and chin spins. They are great wheels and they last a long time

A proper chinchilla wheel is not particularly cheap but it should last for years. Plastic is also a potential hazard to chinchillas. Once ingested it can cause a bowel impaction. I also know of several owners who have had these plastic wheels. They wear out and break quickly. Chinchillas are just too much for their construction.

It is a basic long cage. Herbert that is the same one thank you. I think I'll invest in a saucer. Thank you everyone.

I think a saucer or wheel is equally good. The advantage to a wheel is that it takes less space in the cage and doesn't accumulate a lot of poo. Some people think the saucer is better on your chinchilla's back and posture. Personally I use a wheel and I don't have any trouble.
