Title: Identification ear tag/tattoo
Post by: chinteg on October 12, 2014, 01:36:11 PM
New breeder here.  Just wondering how others tag their chins.  I was into rabbits for years and always tattooed their ear with my breeder brand.  I seen that some breeders use ear tags for chins. Does anybody tattoo or is it all ear tags? Or does it even work like that?  Do other breeders mark their brand on the chins somehow?

I think most breeders who use tags use a type of metal ear tag. The tag must be positioned so that the inscription goes towards the inside of the ear so that show judges cannot see the brand at a glance. The big organizations are Empress and MCBA in America and I think NCS in Canada. It may be best to consult with their rules for the shows you may attend. Most breeders won't tag until the chinchilla is weaned and it is determined to be high enough quality to keep.

As far as tatooing I don't think that is normally done on chinchillas. I suppose you can try and see how well it works. Some mutation colors may grow fur over the ears to the point where the tattoo will be obscured. In addition to that the ear is much thinner than a rabbit. There may be a risk of damaging the ear.
