wow.. LOL I bought Pikachu a chinchiller for 12 dollars....I can buy buy 12X12 granite tiles for 2.99 and have my dad cut them down and smooth them out (he knows how to smooth and polish granite. He is acutauly making my uncles headstone)....I can't believe I didn't think of that before i got the chinchiller. -sigh-

$12.00 for a chin chiller seems pretty steep to me. Ouch! You can probably make one to custom fit your cage with those connections.
I think I paid about 7.00 for mine. Anyway you are right that there are cheap alternatives. I know some recommend getting scrap granite or marble from a hardware store that cuts countertops and they'll usually give those away. Or so I've heard.
I also use marble from a scrapped dresser. It's about 5 times the size of a chin chiller and it's my pet's favorite spot in the cage too.

You can probably pick up a decent sized slab of marble at a flooring/tile store for cheap.
Although they might look at you funny when you tell them what it's for.
