Title: pumice chew block
Post by: Squirrel_Butt on May 02, 2013, 12:32:32 PM
Hello all

I just have a question regarding cleaning a pumice chew block. They are exposedto the shelves in the store and I like to make sure my chins toys are clean before I give them to them.  If I submerge the pumice block into boiling water and pat it dry will microbes grow inside of the center?

I would suggest just hitting it with a bit of sand paper.

That wont get rid of possible microbes present on the store shelves  There's no visible soil on the block. I'm just unsure of the possibility of microbes that might be present in the store.  I cleaned one of these a decade ago but forgot how exactly I did it.

If the package looks good and nothing sticky got spilled or splattered onto it (and that it's out of reach of passing customers with dogs that nose around on things) I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt pumice is a hospitable environment for microbes. I don't think twice about giving my pet things off the shelf. But if you're still really paranoid boiling it probably wouldn't work too great because pumice floats. Unless you want to use a pressure cooker, sanding it will be your best option because the outer surface that *might* be contaminated will be removed. But that is not necessary if the package looks clean.

Perhaps you could bake it in the oven.

ok TY for the replies :).

When I boil it I hold it down with a wooden spoon.
