Way to go Fluffball,
I love it. ::nod::
I have seen many of beautiful cages folks have for in their main house, ya know more like pieces of furniture.
I just love seeing pictures of them, cause one of these days ;D I'd like to have them all up with me, :D
I always like to keep a couple up stairs in the winter usually a Mom getting ready to pop, and do so want one of those beauties.
Come on all the rest of you crafty cage makers, and include hints for keeping the shavings in the cage, attaching water bottles and food dishes, those types of things. ;)

Oh I agree!!  I would live to a cage inside like that for Charlie.  The big wire cages are great for the chinchillas but they do sort of stand out in the room.

thankyou
 ::silly::
well what started the whole thing is that i hated the wire on the bottom of cages and the look and that fact that when i had a bunny i had one of those and scratched my leg really good on the corner of it and I got the inspiration of the design from my hex corner fish tank and my brother is a carpenter and I knew that he would help me.  well i used pine plywood for the floor and for the sides i used 2 inch pieces of wood that were in the discount part of that isle mostly pine and oak and i like the dark finish so i stained it dark and put several clear coats on it and a lot on the bottom i also hated how the pine shavings would fly out and the droppings that is why i made the bottom a lot deeper than usual. i also put the wire on the inside and made sure that it completly covered the intire inside of the sides to prevent them from gnawing on the wood and i used a lot of staples so they wouldn't get hurt on any of the edges and this way there wouldn't be any way for them to pull up any of the wire to hurt them selves.  ::silly:: I would lie to build one for my ferret but i am not sure if my brother is ready for another project like that this soon

::silly:: Hi FluffBall,

You are lucky to have such a talented brother, even more lucky that he would do all that for you! ::nod::  I love the hex design.  When you said you put clear coat on it ... is that the one that is water proof?

Hi ForChins,
I love the wood shelves in your cage (especially the one at the door.   ::nod::  Is that a hay holder on the side?  I like the way it is made.   :::grins::  Keeps the hay inside!  Where did you get your exercise wheel? Cute chins!!!  ::silly::

Hi BabyTaz,
Is the PVC pipe attached to the side?  Cute shape, bet he loves it!  Is this a new fad with the shelves at the door?  I Love it!  It's a cute cage and sets his color off beautifully.  The  contrast really has him stand out.  What a cuttie!

FluffBall, I am just IN LOVE with your cage!!!  I have been begging hubby to build me something similar.  Will you take a picture of the whole cage now that you have all of the shelves in there.  I would love to see how it looks now, all finished and in use.

Hi Chinchillaboy, I added the photo to your post for you.  If you click the second button in the row of bottoms just above the smilies it will put in the image tags for you.  If you hold your cursor over each button a pop-up box will  tell you what each one does.

Welcome back!  I love your cage ... especially the part about it being collapsable ... easier to get through the door opening.  Plenty of room for the chins to play and explore. ::nod::

Yes Jo Ann that is PVC pipe. He loves it. I put the shelf at the door because I like to watch him eat his treats and he also love to stand there and let me scratch him when I am putting his food in.

here are some pics of the cage with some shelves and the apple branch (un sprayed) that everyone asked for i am still working on it i want to put more shelves in for them to hop around on and the house and food dish you see on the shelves are screwed down so i don't have to worry about the other knocking it down i learned that theyboth like to knock down the treats and things i put on there and they put on themselves they are like 2 peas in a pod if they were from the same mom and same color you would swear that they were twins!!!!!

Title: Re: Pictures of your cage
Post by: Jo Ann on July 19, 2006, 10:07:49 AM
::silly:: In the bottom of the cage ( I did a close up of it) ... what is that thing on the top left ... purplish/blueish looking ... a hay holder?

Please be careful with that exercise wheel, the cross bars have been known to break necks and limbs when a chin tries to jump in or out when it's already in motion/moving. Or they can catch their little paws in the wire itself.  :-[

I love that black pipe "tunnel" for them ... bet they sleep in it sometimes!   :::grins::

I see you have one of those ceramic dust baths for them ... I love those ... I was given one as a present and put in in Jewel's cage (she's my tripod chin), but she claimed it for her hut and will not get out of it.   rofl

JoAnn,
That is a hay rack.  I have one in Charlie's cage.  They are pretty handy.  Mine looks just like that have has hooks on all four top edges so you can hang it like in the picture or from the roof of the cage.

Post by: FluffBall on July 19, 2006, 11:34:34 AM
it also has a salt lick holder on it too the  :chin:

black thing is pvc pipe that i found in my parents basement that they were going to throw out they love to sleep in it too cause it is dark i guess ;D

yeah Buddy L will sleep in it and everything but since i put his house on the top he likes it up there alot maybe cause I moved it on him but Snowball will not even go in the bath house  it I think i may have to get another one and I am going to get another house or build one

also the wheel that was the best one that I was able to find the plastic one that i got would stand on the floor or hook on that cage and was open and I had it hooked on the and it snappped right off from his bouncy runs that was his old cage I wnet to every pet store in my area we have a lot
Petsmart, Petco, Petland, Elmers, Pet supplies plus, Walmart, Giant Eagle, I also go into any other pet store I see when I go out of the area  :::grins::

If you could show me a better one I would love to see it :)

I also wanted to ask about those lincoln logs my kids don't play with them anymore and was woundering if they could be use for toys build houses with them for the chins and other stuff
I think they would look so cute for the chins ::silly:: ::silly::

::silly::Hi FluffBall,

In reference to the exercise wheel ... check out http://www.chin-chillas.com/exercisewheels.htm  at Meadowbrook Chinchillas.   They invented and market the wheels.  We have 6 of them for our chins, they are a little expensive, but no more than the LeoBraun and the other popular one.  I like it MUCH better ... they can go at full speed and are not having to look at a 'moving wall' (the inside of a wheel) as they run.

I doubt very seriously that you will find a safe exercise wheel in a pet store or a store like Wal-Mart or K-Mart.  Plastic is a definite  ::nono::

Good question on the Lincoln Logs ... I'd have to find out the type of wood they are made of and the toxicity of the dye they color them with.   I would think the dye would have to be fairly safe since they are origionally made for children.   Pine would probably be the most economical for them to use to make them, but I'd check it out first.   You may be able to contact the company and get that information.  Since the government is so strict about labeling things, it may tell you on the box they came in.  If not, it should have a toll free number or even a web address.   You'd probably get the best answers from customer service.

Let us know what you find out ... I may be searching yard sales!

We get a 1" x 2" x 4' untreated pine board and Bill runs it through the saw, making chin-size chew blocks.

It lied about the no tools, and its not collapsable after you put it together. I used those plastic tie things there white and one you do them they cant be undone.

Thanks JoAnn for helping me post this pic.  :)  Jamie~ I hope you'd consider doing something about programming the resizing automatically, it'll save us lots of time.

Fluffball~ WOW!! Your cage is so impressive, I LOVE it!.....*drooling*...

I engaged a contractor to build this cage some 6 years ago, it's still in a very good condition due to it being stainless, to bring it out for wash can be quite a headache though. Hubby agreed to build one and it's been 4 years.....

OH, You and I are talking about two different things!  Karen had asked me to find a script that would resize pictures people upload so that they fit better on your screen when you are reading the forums.

You are talking about the amount of space it takes up on the website when you upload it.  If you are having a hard time uploading pictures it is because the file is too large.  See if your digital camera has a setting to take smaller pictures.  We have to have a maximum size for picture uploads or else we will run out of space on our website.  Our last forum got so big with picture attachments that I had to keep upgrading the space for our website. That can get rather expensive.
Title: Re: Pictures of your cage
Post by: FluffBall on July 27, 2006, 02:05:27 PM
oh I thought that you were talking about when you post a pic so it would be easier to put them on the site
I know how to down size to put on the site I thought that you were going to get a button to hit that will size it automatically to save us time

well they did they loved it but when I moved I hade to put it through the sliding doors and it wouldn't fit in the new doorway home so it is over my brother for now until after he gets back from vacation and is able to cut it down it is about 5'5" I am 5'4" and it is just a smidgen taller than me and I have them in their old cage the 2 1/2 story ones I hate those cages

I enjoyed looking at people's cages so I thought I'd kickstart this again.
Until recently, all my shelves and floors were wire but my mammy chinchillas feet were starting to look a little red and sore, probably from years on this type of flooring. I've put off the change to wood shelves for too long as 1: I don't have a car and it's difficult enough to transport the material and 2: I'm terrified of getting unsafe wood. I set aside this morning for it and my mum lent me her car. I think I annoyed the shop manager by interrogating him about the processes involved in the production his pine boards!
We're just finished installing the new shelves and flooring and they look great. It wasn't half as tough as I thought it would be to cut them to size and install them. Below are pictures of my furry friend's new pimped out pads!

Not been around for a while.

This is my converted parrot cage. Home to four. ::silly::
The wire floor has now been taken out and they just have the metal tray. I made all the shelves with untreated pine shelves from a DIY store. It was about £20 to do the whole cage. They're fitted with screws and washers. They just about need replacing now due to being eaten. I think it's been two years so not bad going.

Nearly got a cage how I want it.  I've been steadily replacing the plastic ferret and critter nation trays.  I have a mountable house on a platform coming and 3 boards yet to cut in to shelves.  I might put one on the bottom right side.

Currently has my tov white and standard breeding pair

For some reason, there are no pet stores around here that sell sleep n ledges, lava ledges, or chinchillers. I've heard they're discontinued here. :( I ordered some online from Flowertown Chinchillas. When my ledges come in, I'm going to take out the fleece lined ramps.

I don't have a wheel yet either, but I'm ordering the 15" Chin Spin! :)

We played legos with the critter nation cages.  rofl  The whole thing can be one cage but it's split top and bottom for right now.  I need more critter nations or to magically convert my ferret nations.
(http://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u548/takakageri/DSCN2421_zpsqkhbgacw.jpg) (http://s1321.photobucket.com/user/takakageri/media/DSCN2421_zpsqkhbgacw.jpg.html)

The zipties are covered with metal brackets on the inside.  The metal brackets by themselves didn't hold the cages tight enough together.  The wood pieces are filling the gap between metal pans.  I could probably get some custom metal pans from bass and not need to do that but it works fine.  Even the babies have no trouble.  I've still got more shelves and some hammocks to put up and we were going to use the gap filling wood for houses so now we have to pick up another board before we can do that.

Hi! This cage for my chinny:

What was this originally?  I really like the locking doors on the front (though I'm thinking more for my crafting stuff to keep my kids out of it than anything chinchilla-related) :)

That is some nice creativity there. If you start noticing any chewing on the plastic I recommend removing the plastic clips and replacing them with more conventional metal fasteners that use stud bolts and fender washers to secure items to the cage bars. They are not as pretty but chinchillas can chew through plastic very quickly and if ingested it can cause fatal intestinal blockages.

I appreciate the design of the wood items though. They are really interesting.

Looks like fun. I'm not trying to sound harsh but there are some serious problems with your cage setup though. The first thing you'll want to do is remove the ramp that in there. That is extremely dangerous and I can't tell you how many chins have been killed and maimed by getting their feet tangled up in those.

The second thing is to put the water bottle on the outside of the cage and mount it so the spigot goes through the bars. Your chinchilla will likely dislodge it. If it's a plastic bottle (I'm assuming it's glass) it will get destroyed overnight.

The next thing you want to do is remove the plastic tray. The tray may be okay for a ferret but chinchillas will eat anything plastic and this can cause bowel obstructions pretty easily. Having plastic items in the cage is very bad.

You'll want to remove the wheel for the same reason and replace it with a metal one. They are more expensive but it's worth it to take the time to save up for one. These plastic wheels don't last very long, the bearings are terrible and noisy and don't hold up to chinchillas, and if hard plastic is fractured off and ingested it can cause internal lacerations.

You should make some wooden shelves and install those as soon as possible. Having a wood house is good but that's going to get destroyed very quickly without some decent shelving. I can refer you to some information on how you can build shelves with some simple hand tools.

I happen to have the two level Ferret nation cage. I know that the floor tray is plastic as well. I don't think you want to make the modifications that I did to mine unless you're good with tools and fabricating things (I'll be glad to give you some design ideas). I do recommend getting a metal tray that you can find for the FN cage made for chinchillas. These are easy to find online and are commonly used with chinchillas in this style of cage. I know of incidents where chinchillas have chewed through that bottom tray and escaped from their cages. It is something that you'll want to fix right away.

You probably don't want to hear any of this but it is what is it is. Chinchillas are very active and will explore every inch of the cage to find things to chew on and jump off of. Please consider each point carefully. And again, congrats on your new pet. With some adjustment you can make a very nice home from the FN cage.

FYI I know of more than one chinchilla that escaped by chewing the bottom trays on FN cages. You will have to fix that ASAP.

@kathy5, how was shipping off amazon? I am getting either a critter nation or ferret nation off of their, and want to know how it came to you in

Living in Hawaii, you have to be creative in your thinking sometimes.  I WANTED a Double CN and an add-on CN from Amazon - both are prime.  They won't ship the double to Hawaii... damn.  So, I figured out if I buy a Single CN (which they will ship prime) and TWO add-ons, I can get the same 3 stories for just a few dollars more!  WAY better than the only place I found that WOULD ship here... for $199!!

If you are on the mainland and a prime member, Amazon Prime is free shipping!

That's funny.

I just re-read the comment that I made of that chinchilla who escaped from the FN cage. I've been making a video presentation of my cage. Just shot the last camera scenes yesterday. There was someone I clearly remember who said their chin chewed through the bottom of the cage and escaped. Looking carefully at the way the cage is constructed I think the only way that was possible is if the middle and the bottom grates were swapped.

On a standard double level there is a cutout in the corner of the wire grate that the middle tray sits on. This allows the animals to pass between the sections. The other grate is solid all across so the chinchilla which would have made it impossible. Anyway I'm glad you've found a good cage solution. I would think being a prime member would be a necessity over there for most things.

Meet Kuzco (beige) and Kronk (pink white) in their critter nation cage. Fleeces made by my wife with terry cloth underneath to absorb all that pee and all wood platforms made by myself. You can't see the water bottle on the pic but it's on the outside on the left. The wheel is the only plastic in there but they never chewed it, and also never used it to my knowledge...although there is evidence of poop in there every day. The dish in front of the hide is a big ceramic pot saucer, they never used the house as a house but rather as a source of hay and they love to pull it onto the dish and spread it out to pick out their preferred bits.

Very nice indeed. I really like that. It looks awesome.
There's no good reason to have a plastic wheel in there. They tend to disintegrate when chinchillas use them and if they are smaller than 15" (most them are) it can be dangerous for them to actually use.
I recommend saving up and getting a chin spin.

They seemed to like it too, i mean it's like 4x the size of the breeder's cage they lived in. Not to mention the frequent pop-corning on the day they got home. We made some slight changes since then thou, mainly chinchilla proofing the underneath an side of the cage, and even blocking gaps with boxes did not faze them as they pulled them out (crafty lil devils lol). I will not invest in a metal wheel yet as I have not seem them using the wheel at all. I do have a wooden one though if needs be. I have seen a tutorial to make a wooden a wooden running disc from an ikea cake stand thing which looked interesting.
