::silly::Very cute!  Precious little ones!

Question, Please:  Are you using hay as the bedding?

Remember, if it gets wet or moist, it is a breeding ground for mold, fungus and bad bacteria.

No I feed her the night before and then she didn't eat the hay,But she had the baby's on it.She pushed it all to the conner! Kiara is usually up stairs,I put the hay down stairs. When I weighed the baby's I cleaned cage. I glad you said something, someone reading this might thought it was OK to use as bedding.

::silly::Yep, I figured you knew ... but, I just wanted to double check and to remind others.

And, yes, info to others who may read it is always good, we often forget what we once did not know ourselves.

I do this quite often, mostly as a reminder to others or for info they may not think they need to even ask about.

I received a question from a new chin owner the other day.
As a routine, in return I ask about the bedding she was using ...
it turned out to be cedar.

So I ask more questions:

The food was a Kaytee "Deluxe Mix".    ::scaredspeachless::
The hut was made of plastic.   ???
The dust bath dust was left in the cage 24/7.    :::(((
The shelves and ramps were made of plastic.  :(
It also was being given to many treats.   :noway:
And nuts were available to it also.     :'(

It had been in that environment for over a month ... don't know why is was still alive.   ::think::

It is down right scary at times ... these poor little chins with uninformed owners.    ::cry222:::
I'm just glad they ask.

Yeah yesterday was a busy day for me,it was weighing ,cage cleaning day and new baby's. I didn't even think about the hay,I took mom and baby out cleaned and put them back in,and never thought about when I posted the pix that some might not know that.  I am soo happy that you caught that. Thank god you were able to help the chin owner and the chin. To think what might have happed had she/you not askd any questions.

It is really hard.  I had a new owner here last week with all sorts of questions.  Even though she was very curious and wanted to know everything.  It still made me nervous.  But I was also thankful that she Was asking questions since it was her first Chin.  She got everything she needed over this past week and came to pick up the baby yesterday.  She had more questions, but she sounded like she had things undercontrol.  And that she was very concerned for the babies wellbeing.  So I was very happy to sell her a Chin.
I wish more chin buyers and owners could be that way.
I had a girl yesterday email me wanting to know about my chins because she wanted to get into breeding.  But it was her first time, and she didnt want to do "Grays because there are so many out there".  So I explained to her why you need the standards when breeding mutations. YOu cant just do all mutations without the standards or the mutations will weaken.  She wanted to jump right into breeding mutations without any knowledge at all.  AND she said to me she had 2-6 year old chins, a male and female. but she was told she couldnt breed them, so she is trying to find homes for them....which was a red flag for me, if she wanted to get rid of them just for the fact that she couldnt use them to breed??  I have a lot of rescues I cant breed, thats why they are rescues, i dont just get rid of em.

So that worried me a lot.  We will see what her next email says.  And I keep asking her to fill out my questionaire/ application so I can know a little more about her. and she hasnt yet, i asked her twice.

I know what who mean,I had a 7th grader email me the other day who's chin had quads and the runt was getting beat up and losing weight. He kept asking question after question, which was great because the baby is gaining now.

They are just cute enough to eat! ;D

I so love it when they have questions, it's the ones who don't that worry me.

I have some sad news. Little T5 has lost her fight for life. ::sadtears::  Angel was the smallest at birth, 46 grams. I have been hand feeding her for the last two weeks, she was up to 66 grams, two days ago. she has never walked like the kits. Before I started feeding her she was always by her self some where. Mom aways tried to put her under her,but that never worked. Mom bit her just under her jaw. Her jaw was healing nice, it was not too bad. But to much for her I think. So I took Angel, me and her dad took care of her. I would feed, he kept her warm and give her chinnie love. Last night she dropped to 53 grams, I knew she wasn't going to make it. Her feet kept going cold and she would fall asleep when I was feeding her. So Me and daddy stayed up with her all night. Some time early this morning I must fell asleep, I heard daddy make this horrible sound. I picked her and she was gone! I miss her greatly, she give me so much in her short life.  :'(

::silly::That is odd, she had a good birthweight, doesn't sound like she was a preemie ... and she made it past a month old.
Did she stay in the cage with her mom and siblings or did you have her in a separate cage?
When you were feeding her, did you also stimulate her system to urinate and poop?
What were you supplementing her with?

How did she walk differently than the other kits?

Mom bit her just under her jaw.
Mom knew something was wrong with her and that she would not make it.  God grants the mom chins this ability.  The males and young females that have never given birth to her own kits, do not have that gift, only the momma chins and they will not allow one of their little ones to suffer, OR if they do not have enough milk to keep all of them healthy, she will abandon the smallest or weakest one so the others might have a chance to live.
She will not, as a rule, allow the weak one to slowly starve, but will be merciful and take it's life.
This may sound cruel, but it has been this way with wild (and often domesticated) animals since the beginning of time.

This is one of the bad sides of breeding, but you have to be able to handle all of it to be a good breeder.

She kind of hop but not I don't know hoe else to expian it. After she was bit, separate cage. Yes I was stimulate her system to urinate and poop. I was supplementing her with goat milk, baby rice cereal. Yes this is the bad part of breeding.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
I have been asked many times how I do it?
With many tears, and many joys.
It's the joy of the many many times it goes right.
You have 2 beauties to help ease the pain.

I sold a female br.velvet to a young women with a gorgeous standard last year who I was hoping I could mentor some into breeding.
Well it didn't all go well, and one of the kits seemed under developed. Maybe the second uterus as the other 2 of the 3 were perfect.
We went through the hand feeding and all but sadly she died.
The young Lady was so distraught that any future ideas on breeding went out the window, and Dad got neutered.
All four are living happily in a huge condo.
She was going to sell me the black velvet kit, but now can't bare to part with her, how I understand. ::nod::

Oh and the neutering went perfect. Several my vet has done on chins. No stitches, nothing soar showing at all, and after 3 days Dad was even sitting normally, like nothing ever happened.

Yep it is the good times that we remember!! I miss her but I do have two beautiful babies.  ::nod:: The time I spent with her was worth all the pain that came with her death. I learned a lot from her.
