Title: Chirping??? (now with sound clip lol)
Post by: Deeliteful on March 30, 2009, 03:14:59 PM
Ok I have listened to the records of chinchilla sounds but I can't find one that sounds like MeeKeeMee. He has been doing it for me since we got him. He stopped when we had the surgery but now he does it again. When ever I am at the cage he does this real soft chirping sound for me . I say its singing LOL for some reason I like the idea of animals singing to me. Its so soft that if you weren't right there you would not even know he was making that sound.

Does anyone have a chin that does this or know what it means?

Does it sound like a soft "peep peep?"

I had a chin who would make this noise. He would do it during playtime. I think of it as a happy noise. Neither one of my girls make this noise.

My newest girl Star does the same sound when the boys greet her from between the cages..Stew puts his nose to the wire and she puts hers up and they make the same sound...perhaps its a happy sound??

::silly::  If it is what I think it is, it sounds like a greeting ... a happy greeting ... "glad you are here" sound to me.  I have many that do that.  They usually sniff and seem to want to be scratched when mine do it.     ::silly::

Chong does it too. I thought it was a 'I can see the ladies and I want to be with them' noise. If you get my meaning. :blush2:
He has done it to me but he hates being tickled or picked up. I don't know what to do with him lol, he wants attention but doesn't like it. He only likes to play tug of war with me. ::nod::

Yup that is it.  ::silly::  My girls make this noise in shorter succession to let the other know where they are or to find the other.

I played the recording because I wanted to hear what it sounded like. I was in my bedroom, which is where my chins cage is and the looked comfused. I think they were wondering were the sound was coming from.

olivia does that too. she'll just do it randomly when shes out of the cage and shes running around on my floor. it seems just like a "hi i'm here are you?!" sound haha. but also today she was in her cage and she seemed real sleepy so me and my boyfriend were just scratching her ears which we liked and she started doing this loud squeak noise! i dont know what it was but it kinda scared me! when i went back to her and pet her she stopped but then she did it one more time and it was just as loud. does anyone know what this is?

Chins can make a sound similar to the sound of a baby crying. They make that sound when they are very frightened. One chin was making this sound over and aver again while being groomed and after the initial shock we were laughing at how much it sounded like a baby.  rofl

Olivia , did it sound like a squeaky dog toy sorta? Both of my chins will make that sound sometimes when they are asleep . I think its a nightmare and I have to go wake them up and comfort them sometimes when they do it alot. Then my dog started to react to it as well and He will run into the room and put his nose to the cage by where they are and whimper a little as if to say "its ok buddy im here" They think he is just a big chinchilla.

Our Nibbles did that today...After he had settled down in his cage. He is currently on the top part of our Ferret Nation cage...he was a bit jumpy...but has settled in quite nicely...and started with that noise. :) I had told my boys about the noise they can make. [years before kids we had two males that we had rescued]

A happy sound...I like that...my youngest thought he was crying for his brother...I'll have to tell him that it means he's happy... ;)

Cadillac- Yes I have just accepted it as a happy sound . Makes me feel good to hear it now because he only does it when I come up to the cage he wont do it for the hubby  ;D

Olivia - if she just keeps doing it and wont stop then you might gently wake her up and give her some love . That usually makes mine stop.

Only does it for you eh? That's sweet...And must make you feel good that he favors you...I have a dog like that...to the point it irritates my husband. He won't even leave my side for a piece of left over steak! But hearing that it was a happy sound is a good thing...Made the kids night.

::silly::  Here's a website that has almost all the sounds a chinchilla makes and an explanation for each sound.  It's been up forever ... I think it's the best on I've found with so many of the different sounds.     http://www.chinchilla-sounds.de/index_en.htm
