Q & A / Re: New Chin Owner Questions!!
« on: January 07, 2013, 12:13:55 PM »
1. From what I have seen, the Timothy Hay Cubes are ok as a substitute for fresh Timothy hay, but make sure you are buying a HIGH QUALITY Cube.

2. As everyone has already told you about the ball of death.  Barking is a way for chins to warn other chins of danger.  If it's barking, it's scared.

3.  If you are unable to find a pet store where they carry a quality product like Oxbow or Mazuri, you should order online.

If you are going to try those hanging hay balls, just be careful, there is a thread on this forum regarding horror stories with chins getting their little heads stuck in between the wires.  Hay Hangers are OK but again, if your chin is anything like mine, they will jump on top of it and can get themselves stuck in them.  I use a large bowl that mounts to the side of my cage for the hay.  less mess that way, too.

I would just open the cage door and hold a treat near the entrance.  The cage is supposed to be the safe haven to a new chin, reaching in might make it a little nervous.  For as skittish as it seems they are acting, I might even let them be for a week, just to acclimated to it's new surroundings.

Take your ques from them, if they see open to a little more interaction, increase it a bit.  I would see if they come to the cage door for a treat 1st.

Q & A / Re: Holiday Travel with a chin

Thank you! ;)  I was worried about her over eating.  Like I said, I REALLY didn't want to take her on the trip, don't want to stress my baby out!  I want her to be with me as long as possible and was really starting to stress over this whole situation.  I have 2 smaller bottles, but will put them both in, like you said and her food bowl is pretty large.  They hay is my only worry, she goes through it like nobodies business!

We will be staying at someones house.  When I mentioned hotel, I literally meant PET Hotel.  We have them hear for Dogs, cats and other common pets, but not sure if they will take chinchillas.  Basically boarding pets.

For those of you who do shows i guess, if you stay overnight somewhere, do you just keep them in a small colapsable cage or what?  We will be spending more time in the car then anything.  I would love to be able to take her cage, but it's too big to lug around like that.

Q & A / Holiday Travel with a chin
« on: November 13, 2012, 08:05:26 AM »
I am trying to find someone who can feed my Toki Christmass eve night and Christmass morning while we travel for the holiday.  So far, I am hitting a wall :-\.  If it's my last resort, any tips about taking her overnight?  It's cold in my region during this time so I am not worried about temps getting to high and I know to cover her carrier with a light cloth so she can feel safe.  She would be away from home pretty much for 24 hours if we cannot find someone to feed her.  I know this is gonna stress my poor little baby out to no end, but I can't find anyone yet to help.  Anyone know of a pet hotel in Pittsburgh area that would take a Chin?  Most are closed Christmass Day so I don't know if I would be able to pick her up.

I am still searching for someone that can help us just keep her at home, but I need a back up plan for the worst case senario.

Do the cubes have the same benefits of the actual hay?

Safe Toys, cage accessories to spice up Toki's cage even more and now I am looking for a new supplier for hay :flames: I have purchased hay from 2 different stores and within 2 months ended up with 2 bad bags.

:flames:if you didn't even make mention of a refund, then why would they bring it up?  I would send them a messagr saying you did not even entertain that notion, that you were simply thinking of the safty of other pets.  I eoukd then tell them I was going to report them to the better business bureau.

North East USA / Exotic Pet Expos?
« on: August 14, 2012, 01:05:51 PM »
I have been trying to find some kind of exotic pet expo where I can go and search out the next amazing toy for my little one.  I can't seem to find anything near Pittsburgh, PA.  Anyone have any tips to lead to any local businesses that create Chinchilla safe products in my area?  Trying to keep my footprint down and buy local ;)

Update:  It was just her sitting in her pee again.  We switched to fleece liners which I made myself and they are keeping her much cleaner.  She is a nibbler, but she doesn't touch the fleece, Thank God! :2funny:

I feed her Oxbow Chinchillla essentials with a very small pinch of rosehips and Oxbow western Timothy hay.  I give her a small leaf of Spinache in the morning.  During playtime I will give her a very tiny bit of yogurt.

I hear ya, I just wish I knew why her normal yellow discoloration turns brown.  I spot clean her cage everyday too, she she doesn't pee where she lays, infact she has a whole corner she refruses to have litter in so she can lay down, lol.

Maybe I am just an over cautious momma.

A note to add that seems to have gotten lost is that she hasn't been left alone. Either my boyfriend or myself are home with her everyday.  She isn't bored, she is obviously used to having us both home everyday, and she seems to get more jumpy when one of us is gone and she will keep going to the spot where the missing person usually sits and stop for a second, get up on her hind legs and look around.
