Title: Ear tags gone wrong
Post by: ThreeLilChins on June 09, 2007, 12:27:05 PM
Amy and I attend the ecbc Cali state show last year. We had to tag our chins in order for them to to be shown. (We had a huge rancher tag them to) :-[One of the tags was not really placed very well and has always looked odd. Today Milkshakes Had some blood on her coat, and an open cut for lack of a better word. If at all possible is their a way of removing ear tags(I wouldn't myself). I can tell the ear tag is whats causing the problem.

I have also removed her mate. What should I use to disinfect? Thanks for your help.

The tag is like not wraped around the ear. The tag is sticking out of the bar of her ear almost. Its hard to put into words.

::silly::     It's a little hard to see ... the photo is out of focus.

I have never removed one, so I can't say, but I will check a couple of breeders I know that use them and see what they say.

No one is perfect 100% of the time, I am sure the breeder that did it for you meant well, but I wish they had told you how to remove it after the show.

You did the right thing in separating the chins, but you still have to watch out for her scratching or pawing at that area with her feet/hands of her own.  Make sure you do not put the chins back together until the wound is completely healed ... no redness or raw skin at all ... OR the mate will try to heal her, this could end up with part or all of the ear being chewed away.

I would use a good triple antibiotic ointment like Neosporin.  This will promote healing and keep the open wound soft and from becoming hard and itching as it heals.

I'll send out a few e-mails and get back to you.  If someone else know ... please jump in and say so ... this tag needs to come off a.s.a.p. ... there is already damage to the ear and it will no longer set in properly and will only get worse.

I would remove the ear tag, tags have a clips on the small end unclip it and remove it or take the chin to the vet.

::nod::  Billydkd knows what he is talking about ... he answered you here as soon as he got my message ... check for a clip on the small end and see if it will release, if not, let a vet do it for you.  It does need to be taken care of a.s.a.p. to avoid infection and/or futher damage.   ::nod::

We had to remove a few ear tags but it was years ago and I don't really remember how.  I do remember that my husband and I were able to do it together with no special tools.  I'm sure if you take a close look at the clip you will be able to figure it out.  Ears heal very fast.  It won't ever look the same but it isn't something to be concerned about.

You can use small wire cutters to remove the tag.
