I am really sorry.  It is the worst thing to have to go through.  But you will get through it.  It will be a year this month that I lost my bestest chin in the world and Im still recovering from it.
In fact, I have been thinking about getting his face as a tattoo Im so distraut about his death.
So its tough, but youll pull through.  We are here for ya!! :( :(

She sounds like a Mosaic chin to me, if shes white with black around her eyes.  But you never know.  If she is from a breeder she could be that much money.  I wouldnt pay that much for her at a pet store though.  Pet stores tend to increase their prices because they think they have something "rare" when infact its not.  At least in the one pet store that has just moved to my town anyway.
As for the ebonies, to my belief I always thought that any ebony will have a dark gray anywhere down to a very light gray belly.  As long as its not white, then its an ebony.  But if their bellies are white then they are standards.

Am I correct in saying this everyone?
Anyway, its good of you to give him a nice home after hes been shipped around from home to home like that.  Poor guy.  Its a good thing hes found you.

Good for your cousin for saving him and giving him to you.  I have saved I dont even know how many chins from our shelter, for one so they dont become euthanized, and for two because I dont want just any random person adopting a chinchilla because they think  they are cool and different, and because its only 50 bucks to adopt at our shelter, anyone can go and get one when they normally wouldnt bc of their normal prices.
It just worries me like that.  I dont know why.  Ive seen people who have no idea what a chinchilla is go into a shelter and just adopt it bc they can "actually" afford it this way.  And Ive also seen them bring the chin back too because they were too much for them to handle and they didnt know how much they needed to know to care for one.

But Congrats on him.  He sounds really nice and he looks handsome.  Good Luck with him and we are all here if you have any questions!!  :::grins:: :::grins::

Yes, is that what a light ebony is, just a standard with a dirty belly?, meaning its showing off the ebony gene.

I dont know, him being 16ish and all I wouldnt try breeding him.  Plus he has not history so you dont know what kind of lines hes come from.

She sounds beautiful though!  I love ebonies.  I have a few myself Im trying to work with.

My female ebony had her babies yesterday.  I think one might turn out to be a light ebony if her belly doesnt turn white, and stays light gray.  Not sure yet though.  I posted pics in another thread titled T8 and T9.

So that would make him about 16 years old roughly.  Ive never heard of chins breeding this late in life.  It might be too late for him.
Was it a breeder who told you 9 years old?  Did they give you a pedigree with his birth date on it?

How old is the female?

New Births / T8 and T9!!!
« on: May 30, 2007, 04:11:24 PM »
My Raisin had two kits yesterday, a boy and a girl.

T8 Female 55 grams

T9 Male 53 grams

Not too sure if they will be standard or ebony, mom is a medium ebony and dad is a mosaic.  Their belly colors are a toss up, whether they will be gray or white.

Thank you!  They are precious.  i just love watching them play with each other.
They are gaining nice.  The little white one with beige is interesting looking.  I cant tell what hes going to turn into.  Hes a very light beige, so light he looks white but then you can see beige areas.  And next to his white brother, hes definitely not all white looking.
What do you call a white chin with beige areas?  Not a mosaic right?  Would it still be a Pink White?
This part confuses me.

The three kits are doing great!  Mom doesnt seem too distraut about the little one passing away.  She has her hands full.

New Births / Quads!!

Well Kiwi had Quads last thursday.  But she is known to have a runt in every litter.  Her last Hetero Beige runt didnt make it past 3 days.  And her Hetero Beige runt in this litter didnt make it past 4 days despite all our help, supplementing and alone time with mom, he just didnt pull through.
Here is a pic of all of them on their Second day.

More on my website if you want to see them.  www.fortheloveofchinchillas.com
