General Chat / Sharing Pics of my Shorty
« on: June 04, 2007, 03:24:57 PM »
This is Shorty my Homo Beige, bred here from Kiwi and Coconut (their first litter born on christmas eve).
I just think he is so handsome and how much hes grown up that I had to share some of his pictures.

Id like to eventually get him to a show and see what they have to say about him.  And I was also thinking about breeding him in the future, but time will tell.

Hi,
I live in Rochester NY, but you can definitely look at the directory we have.  It will give you all the names of breeders in Ohio.  I know the ritterspach breeders are in Ohio, forget which town though.  I just bought two chins from them.
Their website is
www.chinchillas.com

But I would definitely try our Breeders Directory

They are very adorable babies!!

Q & A / Re: Introducing Chinchillas
« on: June 03, 2007, 10:42:34 AM »
I usually put their cages together for a few weeks when introducing, this is after the qurantine period of 2 weeks.  If they are biting, just pull the cages apart a few inches.  They can still smell each other and communicate from this distance.

I also dont breed my pairs if the male is larger than the female.  This is very dangerous if you breed two, and the female is smaller than the male.  She could develope very large babies and there is always a chance that they wont fit through her small birth canal.  So make sure he is smaller than her.

Jo Ann is 100% right when saying you should worry about what the kits are going to be bred to if they will be bred at all.
The lethal factor is very scarey and I would never risk it.  They should all be bred to standards just to improve on the mutation and to prevent the lethal gene from kicking in.

Q & A / Re: Help! My chinchilla has gone missing.
« on: June 03, 2007, 10:31:54 AM »
Weird.  She might have loved her taste of freedom and just wants to be out of the cage.  She might be biting you to let you know she hates it in there right now and wants out.

If this is the case, the more you put your hand in there, or your dad to take her out,  you are only reinforcing this behavior.  She will know that biting and making a fuss will get you guys to open her door and shell have another chance to run.  Chins are smart.
I would leave her be for the day and check on her before bed or feeding time.
She might be better tomorrow and back to normal in a few days.

Did you check her out to make sure she wasnt physically hurt anywhere on her body?

Hes beautiful!!!  I would totally consider it if I didnt just buy a violet myself from Ritterspach.
And if I had my runs yet.  I have a friend building a four unit run for me.  But I was going to put others in it.  So I wish I got your message earlier.
Are you taking pics of the other 3 chins?

Congrats.  Its exciting to be engaged. I should know, Ive been engaged for 3 years now!  Hahahhahaha.  We havent had time to plan or pay for a wedding and just bought a house so its really tight now.

We might do Vegas too and a reception at home.  Gorgeous ring. Is that with the wedding band in the picture too?

Thats tough.  where in your house is the chin room? Upstairs, downstairs, basement?

You can always follow the cat around, cats are very keen with their hearing and might just lead you to her. even if she is behind a wall or in a duct somewhere, the cat will hear her walking around and will look very interested when it hears something.

Try that, leave out food and water in the room for her incase she comes out.  You can try that and close the door, and check back to see if anything is eaten. or try putting raisens in a pile on the floor to see if shes eaten them.  Then you will know shes still in the room.
 Keep us posted

Memorials / Re: Newby just lost my best friend
« on: June 03, 2007, 10:11:10 AM »
Accidents happen.  I thought my cats had got to Chilly when he died last summer  but it wasnt them, they werent even downstairs at the time.
All I remember is my brother calling my fiance (we were sleeping at his apartment) and I woke up with Don telling me something was wrong with Chilly.  And I immediately started crying because I had a really bad feeling about it.
We drove to my parents house (right down the street) and when I walked in the door I saw him laying on his side in the kitchen.  My parents and my brother were standing around him.  I istantly fell to the floor in agony and disbelief.
I have never cried so hard in my life.  There was blood on my brothers pants and shirt from carrying him up from the basement.
I had them in the basement because it was so hot out that week.  Chilly must have creeped out after I had cleaned and fed them and was roaming the basement.
My brother says he was going downstairs (thats where he sleeps) and saw Chilly laying at the bottom of the stairs twitching, blood coming from his ears and nose.

I was in such a state of shock that I was in bed all weekend.  It happened on a Thursday night, I was supposed to drive to my friends in NYC that friday and spend the weekend there.  But I just couldnt get the strength to move.  I was literally in bed all weekend.  Ive never cried so much in my lifetime.  He was my very first chinchilla, 9 years old he was and he was the absolute best.  He was the tamest chin Ive ever met, sat on my shouldar while I drove places, and just loved it up there.

His picture is my icon actually. And that is the picture that I want as a tattoo somewhere on my body. I cant think of the right place though.  I was always thinking of on the back of my shouldar bc he loved to sit on my shouldar but I want to be able to see him.

Im sorry Im rambling like this.   Your story just reminded me of that day and I wanted to share it with all of you too.
It helps to get it out and share stories like this.

Let me know if you need anything, we are all here to help! Again, I am so sorry for your loss. :'(

I am so sorry about Zorro.   :'( Its always so hard to lose them and especially if they were never sick.
Its happened to all of us.  Im still getting over the death of my very first chinchilla Chilly from last summer.
June 29th will be a year since that day and I want to get a tattoo of his face somewhere as a memorial to him.

Its hard but we will help you get through it.  Keep your head up!

So how can you distinguish between a pink white that is all white, and a pink white that has some color to it?

I guess my confusion lies with the Phenotype.  I know that all Pink Whites are result of a Beige and White chin, making their genotypes beige/white.  But I always looked at pink whites to be all white chins, with the pink ears, pads and such.  I rarely see pink whites that have mosaic beige spots.  Well, Ive seen them, I just thought that we called them something different, it would make it easier if they had another classification so that pink whites could be considered all white, and the ones with the beige markings could be called something else.

When people are asking me for a pink white, some of them assume they are all white, and are dissappointed when I tell them one of them has beige on them.  So not a lot of people realize the whole pink white thing.

Breeding 101 / Re: Thinking of Breeding.
« on: June 02, 2007, 09:13:46 PM »
I agree, they should definitely be from a breeder!  Pet store chins are usually chins that the breeders have considered as non breeding stock, which is why they are sold cheap to the pet stores, and the pet stores just jack up the prices and make them look like real great chins, or something they have that is "rare". when in reality, those chins could be prone to mals or heart murmurs or anything health related.

But at least you are looking into the pros and cons before doing it, and at least waiting til she is of age.
Do you have pics?? we always love pics!!
