Title: new chinchilla
Post by: Crazyfist on June 08, 2006, 06:33:33 AM
Hi all, myself and my girl friend just got our first chinchilla "Trevor" :) late last night while we were in the room, he started chanting really loudly, a series of about 8-10 loud yells... we looked it up in our book and there was two "calls" that described what it ment.

1. it was an alarm call
2. it was a cry for attention

Trouble is we dont know the difference yet, he did it all through the night after we went to bed, every 2-3 mins he did it, but only when he heard us talking, or the TV in the bedroom, or when we got up for the bathroom lol. They were very loud yells, took us completely by surprise because we had only ever heard a chinchilla squeek when the guy at the pet shop tried to catch him.

Any suggestions?

i do have a recording of it, but i used my mobile phone to record it and i dont think most people would be able to play it back.

Thanks.

Hes 7 Months old and we only bought him yesterday.

Never mind, we have figured it out by means of a useful site that had chinchilla sounds on it, apparently it was an alarm call and happens to lots of chins when they are taken to a new home.

Thanks anyway.

He may not be scared, chins will bark just to let others know they are around. He may be checking to see if he is alone.
I have some that do it in their sleep.
Some can carry a good tone for a good spell too.
We have gotten into the habit of  "wooting" back when they do it. ::nod::

::silly::  Hi Crazyfist,

Your little one could be lonely, scared or even trying to alert you.  Chinchillas will often make a high/loud sound to alert other chins (even his human family) of dangers.  To him, at this point, any unusual sound is a threatening sound.  Once he gets use to the different sounds he will probably stop.

I remember hearing about one chinchilla alerting his human family to someone trying to break in to their house.

Michael's Chinchilla Home Page at:  http://www.chinchilla-sounds.de/index_en.htm is the best site I have found for chinchilla sounds.
