Q & A / Re: Chinchilla shakes when outside of her cage
« on: February 22, 2012, 09:52:14 AM »
Does she see you hold the other chin? And with playtime, is the other chin on the couch with her? I only have one, and at first he would shake while I tried to hold him, so I would kind of cover him or give him a shelter/hiding spot under my hand and he is slowly getting over it (it's only of he is at eye level)

Yes it is completely normal! They are part of the rodent family, so they forage for food. My chin digs inside his igloo home all the time just to play:)

I have heard of people doing the same thing, and have thought of doing that for when I get another chin (I have the same type of cage). Please let me know how it worked out!

Athletes foot powder is an anti-fungal powder, and will get rid of other skin fungi other than Athletes foot (the powder kills all skin fungi). And since he rolls in his dust bath, adding it in there will ensure it gets all over him and will not only kill the fungi, but I'm pretty sure it will attach to the dust from the bath and fall out of his fur. :)

So glad to hear that your chin is still doing good! The fact that he is able to handle this stress so easily is due to great care you guys are giving. Thanks for the update

Q & A / Re: Koolaid & Jello to add flavor?

hmm, possibly sugar free would be alright. Make sure you get the right type of wood (some are harmful to chins)

I wouldn't risk it. Not only are there about a gazillion (okay maybe not that many, but there are a lot!) of variations of the same species of plant (especially flowers),but unless you planted that yourself you aren't sure what's in the soil. The best company in my opinion is Oxbow, and you can find a lot of natural treats from them (and online!).
And no matter what the treats are, limit them or he will stop eating his normal diet since he will be stuffed full of treats!

General Chat / Mix bedding?
« on: February 19, 2012, 10:47:50 PM »
So when I got my chin about a 1 1/2 months ago, the lady (at the pet store) recommended ECO BEDDING; which is basically recycled paper that is not dusty and safe for chinchillas. I saw only a few reviews on it, and it seemed pretty good so I tried it. I didn't smell any odor the first 2 times I used it and cleaned out the cage (I do it about once a week). I would also clean the cage with Nature's Miracle Cage Cleaner. The next time I cleaned it I noticed it smelled worse, so I then used vinegar to clean out his cage as I thought it was the cleaner. Well I changed out the bedding thursday, and it already smells again. I've smelled his pee during play time (he goes on a towel) and it doesn't smell at all, so I don't think it is him. And the bedding I use now seems to absorb it all, just no odor control. I also heard pine can be bad for their respiratory long term. What about mixing a little bit of pine with the ECO bedding I have? (and how much, a quarter of pine or half and half?)
OR what bedding do you guys recommend? I have a cage with a solid pan at the bottom.

Thanks

If I'm taking my chin to another room to play (he plays in my room sometimes, and the bathroom other times) I actually will put him in a box (I use the carrier I got with him since it has handles and holes; or a shoebox with holes will work!) not only for him to feel okay about it, but since my sister has a curious kitten as well. He jumps in the box whenever he wants to go to the bathroom now! Hope this helps :)

My furry lil man sleeps on his back in it, takes his food up there to eat in it, and watches tv in it. He loves it so much so I'm sure your chin will too!

I am so, so sorry for your loss. Please let your son know that no matter how hard you try, there will always be accidents.

Your chin will probably seem a little down while he is trying to adjust being alone; I would watch him closely to make sure he still eats, is active at play time etc. I'm sure extra playtime and bonding will help not only the chin move on, but you guys as well. Since he is a few years old, I'm not sure if it will put more stress on him getting another chin right away, or if it may actually help. Hopefully someone who knows more about this will give you more advice on another chin or not, sorry that I can't be of any more help.
