Breeding 101 / Mating Plug? Heat Plug?
« on: August 17, 2008, 04:26:21 AM »
Ok, so I have a question and I hope this doesn't sound extremely stupid...

Peekers and Boo have been separated since the birth of their kits. They had one supervised play time where neither one even showed an interest in mating. Everyone just ran around with each other - no mating.

Last night I decided to put them back in with each other. It has been 10 days, so there was no immediate breed back.
I've been in this room all night and they said hello to each other, but for the most part, the two of them did their own thing in there.
I noticed the two of them sitting by each other eating food and then I noticed that Peekers was becoming annoyed with Boo. He was showing the signs of wanting to mate (getting a little extra close and grooming her)...she didn't much care.
I saw them mate the first time they mated back in April...so I'm well aware of what this looks like, AND Boo had hiccups after it was all over with.
Back to last night though, I saw how Peekers just wanted to ignore him, so I decided to take him out and put him back "down stairs" in the cage. When I went to touch Peekers she had something on her back. I thought maybe it was a poop, but when I took her out there was a waxy substance smooshed on her.
Now here is my question.
Is this the "heat plug"??? Did she expel it and get it stuck to her? OR, quite obviously the other question, did they mate? They must have been extremely quite and low key about it if they did because I never saw or heard a thing...things were very quiet in there tonight, no one was even jumping around. I had to cut it out of her pretty fur  :-[
I'm just confused, how am I supposed to tell the difference between the two of these, ESPECIALLY when the dang thing was a mini pancake on her back!  >:(
And now I feel like maybe I shouldn't have put them back in so soon.  I know some people only wait 3 days, but - oh I don't know...
I'm totally fine with it if she is pregnant again. I will probably stop breeding her after that though.
Looking forward to everyone's input.

First of all I think we would all love to see pictures of your Chinnies!!! I think we can all aggree when I say we love pictures here?!!? AM I RIGHT!??!
I'm sure many of us could help you to figure out what color they are.

Second of all, I feed my Chinchillas Mazuri. I pay like 10 - 15 for a HUGE bag that lasts me a VERY long time. Really the two best are Mazuri and Oxbow.
What are you feeding them?? What brand I mean.

Conformation and Quality / Re: Chinchilla fur
« on: August 14, 2008, 06:14:20 AM »
Thanks so much for the info. I knew about the priming and all of that, but I was just unsure if the fur quality "diminishes" with age. Thanks for answering! The reason I asked is I have a Homo. Beige Chinchilla and he will be 6 on Sunday. Some of his fur is still nice and some of it has that tint to it. He's obviously been through a lot of primes in his lifetime so far! I don't think he had the most WONDERFUL life - but now that he's with me I am trying to make sure that his coat looks nice while it still can. He began his 9th Prime in June and will peak in the middle of October.

Here are two links:

One is to my Chinchilla blog

One is to the other blog I keep about my animals

I'll be short on posting pictures a lot like I have in the past only because my camera just crapped out on me. Every single time I REALLY need it, it stops working. UGH - the luck I have.

Feel free to subscribe. Or you can let me know on here if you want to be added to the mailing list and every time I update you'll get the email about it.

Enjoy! ;)

Conformation and Quality / Chinchilla fur

Hopefully I am in the right spot.
My question is:
Does Chinchilla fur change with age?
I know that it can oxidize...which I'm still not 100% sure on (meaning, I don't know what causes it and all of the info, but I am interested in knowing)
And does the "quality" change with age? Can a chinchilla that once had really great fur, start to look a little "ruff around the edges"??? ::shrug::
Fur really interests me at the present moment.

Well I thought I was giving it like 5 days before she was going to have them, but she ended up having them before that, so she had hers probably 2 days before her kits came. I'm waiting until 10 days to give her a bath now. She's going to be in heaven when that happens. My male, Boo, he cried for her after I separated them. She's on the top floor and he's on the bottom. They can still see and sniff each other. He got over it after about 2 days, but man was he sad. He WWWWUUUUUUUUUUUUUUVVVVVVVVVSSS her

You're welcome! I put my girl in her cage about a week and a half before I thought she was due. She actually had them around 106 days. He due date was yesterday, she had them on the 8th though - hehe.

I've heard some people say that Chinchillas that look that way are just bad quality, but I don't think so at all. They just look like where they come from! ha! But I do like the rounded look a bit better, I'm hoping his offspring will have softer features than he does.
BUT I love my Boo, he's a good little boy.  ::kiss99::

Sorry to hear about your Grandpa :::(((

My female just had her kits and I think it was about a month before hand  :-\ - I think?? that I felt what you are feeling. I would let her put her tummy on my hand and I could feel the little "gum balls" - even started to feel them kicking and rolling. What you are feeling is more than likely the kit(s) since you're so close. There could be more than one. I had a pretty good idea that there weren't more than 2 kits in my female. It's all kind of a surprise really! Good luck and let everyone know when they/it are/is born!! ;)

12 Rats huh?! My Mom had a rat when she was younger and loved it to death. She said he was like a dog. I hear they are very intelligent  :)
