General Chat / Chinchillas in Vancouver
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:15:06 PM »
Hi, I'm moving to Vancouver with my chinchilla but I'm having a really hard time finding a place to buy a cage for him.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Thankyou!

There are a few poops today but they're small.  He's out of his hut though and eating, and this morning I heard him drinking too so this is all good news.

I don't know if he pooped in his playpen, my other chin was in there before him.....

I will try the apple thing but TBone is just so picky, he won't put anything in his mouth if it's not a raisin or pellet or hay.  Actually come to think of it, I have some cranberry juice that I froze in ice cube sizes for emergencies like this - the pure stuff.  I should try that too.

Thanks again!

Sounds dumb yes but here's the situation.  TBone has not been pooping.  He also hasn't been coming out of his house for the last 24 hours.  I took him out of his cage and inspected him and there was a poop stuck to his fur and he smells a bit like pooh.  His fur around his bum is matted a bit.  The poop stuck to his fur was small and a bit squishy.

BUT there are no other poohs in his cage.  There was a little bit of a mess inside his house, like a smear, but it was probably just that one poop that he sat on all day.

I'm at a loss for what to try to treat him for.  I would rather see wet poops all over than this, so I have given him 2 more raisins.

I cleaned him up with a moistened paper towel and gave him a dust bath, and let him run inside his playpen for a bit to get his system moving.

I don't know if any of this was right or what else to do.

Hi everyone.  Sorry for the delayed post!  He turned out to be just fine from that trauma - maybe even better than me.  His tooth had a white scratch mark on it and there was a bit of healing to be done on his gum, but he was okay.

He's not well again now though but I think that's a matter for another thread.... :-[

okay I just grabbed him and looked and teeth are intact except there is a bit of blood on one and it looks like him gum is cut up a bit.  Could he have cracked his own tooth?  I dont think he would have the power to crack his own tooth from pulling on it.  But thank goodness, his teeth are still shaped just fine....

poor little guy!  The trauma!

Health / Tooth stuck in corner of cage...
« on: September 11, 2008, 09:05:35 PM »
Hi, everyone!

I just found my chinchilla stuck in the corner of his wire cage.  His tooth was stuck in the corner and my boyfriend had to grab a tool and take off a ring clamp to loosen it to get him out.  He thinks maybe a tooth is chipped.  I don't want to bother the chin though, he is super freaked out and hiding in his hut, anymore action might put him over the edge.

If his tooth is chipped, how bad is that?  If it's little, will he just chew wood and his teeth will grow and eventually the chip will be gone?  If it's a big chip, is there anything we can do?  I can't find any piece of tooth anywhere!

This is so scary!  Should I just grab him and cause him more trauma and look in his mouth?

Q & A / My picky eater is not eating his new pellets!
« on: May 08, 2008, 06:20:31 PM »
I cannot believe how picky TBone is!  He refuses to eat anything except for raisins and hay....and his old pellets.  I had to switch him off Traditional pellets cause I changed suppliers.  I did it very gradually, a bit more new pellets over a long period of time (at least a month).  We're now just on the new pellets....Mazuri.  He must hate it!  He hardly touches it at all.  I'd say he's eating maybe 1/16 cup a day.  He chows down on hay like there's no tomorrow though.  And he DOES eat some pellets.  He is very tiny and doesn't normally eat very much anyways, but he is definitely eating less than before.

I'm worried.  I am thinking of switching again to Oxbow, which the supplier carries, but at a massively different price.  I have another chin who eats whatever I give him, but I don't like the idea of switching food so often for both of them.  Not to mention I have about 7 pounds of the new stuff still....

Should I just wait it out and he'll get used to the new pellets?  This chinchilla is so picky, he won't even eat banana chips, or cheerios, or even oats.  It's bizarre.  Just goes to show how strong their personalities can be  ::nod::

Q & A / Re: 2nd Chinchilla
« on: May 08, 2008, 06:09:54 PM »
Hello and welcome!  There is no better place on earth for chinchilla info, so it's good you found us.

I am cautioning you against a second chinchilla, especially if you don't have much time for the first one.  I'll give you two case scenarios:

One:  My friends had a chin for a bit and then got a second.  They don't have much time for them either, and don't let them out for playtime.  :( They thought they would amuse each other.  Well recently, after about a year and a half, the chinchillas have started fighting.  Their original guy is getting pummeled by the newer guy.  He has tattered ears, and has become completely anti-social.  They've had to separate them, and now they have two lonely chins in two cages that get little-to-no attention.  It's very sad.

Two:  I got a second chin after a while and immediately they didn't get along.  My first chin is too territorial, very bitey and very happy to be alone.  They just attack each other when they are allowed out together.  Now I have two cages side by side, and they can only sniff at each other from their cages.  It's twice the work (mine DO get let out almost daily, two times the play time), and cage cleaning is a pain in the butt!

I guess the moral of both these stories is be prepared to have two cages and twice the work, if you get another one and it doesn't work out.

My suggestion, if you are worried about one guy being alone, is get a nice big cage with a flying saucer wheel, and spend some time making some fun play toys for him.  They aren't lonely, they just get bored.  Martin's cages are awesome, and huge.

Martin's Cages

Besides, if you get another chin, they realize you're not a chin (or that they're not a human) and they will not interact with you the same way anymore.

Regardless of what you decide, good luck!

This might be totally obvious and I apologize in advance, but you have thoroughly inspected the water bottle?  I had an issue with mine where it would be okay for a few seconds, but then stop.  I would need to shake it to get the water flowing again.  I didn't notice for a day, and my poor chin went nuts on the water bottle when I shook the water out for him.  Luckily I had a spare one for emergencies.

Q & A / Re: Hay
« on: April 28, 2008, 04:28:00 PM »
Pellets are made up of mostly alfalfa hay, so it's best to have timothy hay as well.  I think mixing the two types together is a good idea.

General Chat / How would you describe a chinchilla?
« on: April 26, 2008, 04:04:13 PM »
Isn't it weird how many people have no idea what a chinchilla is?  I often find myself explaining what a chinchilla is, and it's kind of difficult!  They're really strange little animals.  I find myself comparing them to rabbits, bats, mice, buffalos (the neck thing)..... how do you describe them?

General Chat / Re: How smart are Chinchillas?
« on: April 26, 2008, 03:59:17 PM »
I think it depends on the chinchilla.  I have two, and one is as dumb as a doorknob, but the other is too smart for his own good.

Is it braced at the bottom?  Try sticking some wood pieces under that metal bar to brace it.  If it's braced and stable inside the cage, it shouldn't move the cage around very much.

There are times when I think my chins are so smart......and then they pick up a pooh and eat it.
