General Chat / Re: Chins n Quills
« on: January 26, 2009, 07:50:53 AM »
They just recently paid their bill for another 3-5 years..?  I think we are just trying to be patient and wait it out.  I found a thread on yahoo yesterday that the Admin had tried numerous times to contact the owners with no luck.

Most all of my chins make that noise.

They are supposed to be kept in seperate rooms for 30 days and no contact whatsoever at first.  Then caged side by side for at least 2 weeks so they can get to know one another.  It is supposed to be at least 6 weeks, usually longer before they should be allowed to be together.

I wouldn't leave them unattended due to a potential fight.

Do you have pics?  I have had several TOV's that didn't show up right away, it took some time for it to show.

I would check to see if any of the members on the forum make toys.  They would be very chinchilla safe.  Almost anything you get from the pet store is bad, it says it is for chinchillas but is usually junk!

I don't think you will be able to get any eye drops without a vet.  It could be an eye infection or my best guess is teeth, if it is the teeth, I wouldn't waste any time.

Q & A / Re: How can you tell if a chin is a boy or girl?
« on: January 18, 2009, 06:07:24 AM »
Good post Abby!

Yes, if you can not sex a chinchilla, you are NOT ready to breed, period.  There are many, many things to learn before you just throw 2 animals together and have babies.

Do you know these answers...
What chins are acceptable for breeding?
How long is a female pregnant?
What do you feed your chinchilla?

Is there any wetness under the chin?  Teeth problems can cause eye issues..

Q & A / Re: Sleeping!
« on: January 07, 2009, 08:59:29 AM »
Many, many of my chins sleep on their sides, a few on their backs, they sleep in all sorts of positions..

As long as she is eating, drinking, pooping and very active, I wouldn't worry.

I also like to ask everyone... what kind of feed is she on?  I like to see all chins on a high quality diet and not petstore junk food.

Some chins sleep on their backs.. I've seen it all here, especially when they are sleeping in the 'dead' position and you poke them and the jump  ::think::

Not trying to be rude but his food is garbage  ::nod::  I would throw it out and get a better feed, Mazuri or Tradition are probably the 2 most commonly used feeds used and pretty easy to find.

His diet will play a huge factor in his health and life span.

Almost any food you find in a pet store is garbage, truly.  It should be against the law for them to sell it....

Breeding 101 / Re: Is this breeder crazy?
« on: January 07, 2009, 08:50:50 AM »
Yes... so many things can go wrong.  I had a bonded pair that turned on each other just Friday night, the male almost killed the female, I am assuming she wold not breed for him due to all of the bite marks around her neck.  She is beat up pretty bad, eating very small amounts, the bites were so bad, one of her eye is closing.  I have her on meds but she's not looking good...

I delivered my first babies on Thanksgiving Day, it was NO fun.

I also took in a rescue, about 6 months old, I found her dead in her cage with a babies nose sticking out of her.

There are SO many things that can go wrong with breeding, I recommend anyone to do TONS of research before breeding and find a mentor to help you.
