Q & A / Weeing on shelves
« on: January 13, 2007, 11:09:02 PM »
::silly:: We have a problem re: weeing on shelves. When Gizmo was in his cage that he is in now, he would wee all over the shelves. When he was placed in the birthing cage with Pookah for mating and then through her first litter, there was never a wet shelf! Except of course when he would get sprayed by Pook! He never went the whole time they were in together in that cage and it had wood shelves. Now that he is in the old cage again (Superpet with plastic shelves... yes I know it is plastic but he doesn't chew them) he is weeing on his shelves again and has gotten his son into it too!  The weirdest thing is thye have a piece of drift wood in there that they like to sit on and at times you would think they use it as a porta potty!! ::beeker:: There is poo on the shelf right below a hole in the wood!! Not to mention wee under another hole near a knot in the wood. ??? It is the ODDEST thing I have ever seen! I wish I knew what to do too. We have also thought about trying the litter box. Loki our other male does almost all of his pooing and weeing in the bottom of the cage. Any suggestions?!  Or is this just their...oddity?? ::)

New Births / new little fluffmeisters
« on: January 04, 2007, 02:01:03 AM »
well, after a long and somewhat grueling wait, pookah was blessed with twins!  One is a beige and the other a dark standard.  We have not sexed them yet as we didn't want to disturb her too much.  Besides Pookah ( and us) this was hardest on Loki.  He literally stood guard watching her from his cage the last several days.  He was even scolding ::tickedoff:: us this morning when we were holding them and he isn't even the daddy.  poor guy.  We are going to let everyone rest tonight and then will check sexes in AM; names to follow.  So far we are looking at Magi if male and Noelle if female.   ::think::

Breeding 101 / Pregnancy Info
« on: January 01, 2007, 10:17:58 AM »
Hi I read on a different thread from Joann that the signs of pregnancy are

 1) Weight gain
 2) sleeping on her side
 3) fur around the teats falling away
 4) longer, pinker teats
 5) amount of food eaten should increase
 6) often a mood change
 7) amount of water increases just before delivery
Cool flatten out on the bottom of the cage with some rapid breathing
 9) doing what looks like stretching exercises
10) cleaning her self more than normal
11) discharge
Most of these will apply most of the time, but not always.
Jo Ann

In more advanced labor, do yøu mean discharge as slight spotting of blood?  Do they actually have a water sac to break like we do when it becomes imminent, do the kits move down into the vaginal vault as do human babies?
Pookah is REALLY looking pregnant and awful uncomfortable.  she had some light spotting last night and her rump is a little more oblong than normal.   I think by the gestation calendar we had her due today!

Any advice?

Q & A / Escape routes for pets...Do you have one?
« on: December 04, 2006, 10:07:15 PM »
Boy did we have a bad scare the other night! ::Hairraising:: ::scaredspeachless::
After the 3 hr clean up of all the snow dumped on us, my husband and I decided to put up our Christmas tree.  Now, we bought this thing brand new from Steins and we had never put it up before.
I would say after about 20 miutes of the lights being turned on, we began to smell a plastic like burn odor.  Not more than 5 minutes after that the smoke alarms went off!  This house is brand new as we have only lived here for a year.  (Now, at the same time, we also had a fire going in the fireplace.)
As the alarms are hard wired into the electrical systems, you can't just go shut them off.  We ended up calling the local fire dept.and †hey recommended evacuating the house.  There was NO sign anywhere  of smoke!  So, at 11 or 1130 PM we had the fire dept on their way with lights and sirens blarring!
They used heat imaging cameras all over the inside and the outside of the house and could find nothing.  They said it could have been one of two things; the tree or the fireplace.  We told them we have had fires before and the only thing new was the tree.  Their recommendation was to take the tree back (no easy feat let me tell you...that would take another post!::tickedoff::) and have †he ƒireplace looked at anyway.
We had initially told them we could not evacuate everyone (meaning the chins) and two of the 4 cats were hiding under a bed.  They suggested we devise some kind of a plan to get the cages out of house or we may lose tm in the even it would happen again!
My question is.... Do any of you keep your chins in the house and do you have a means of evacuating them in an emergency.  We also live in an area of the midwest that sometimes gets some wicked weather in the summer (tornados).  What would you do?? ??? ??? ::scaredspeachless::

Q & A / Loki didn't like company..what to do?
« on: November 28, 2006, 12:40:01 PM »
Hi all, I am new here.  We have had chins now for about 2 yrs.  We got Loki last spring and he really seems to be quite tempermental at times.  Our household is compromised of myself, hubby, 4 cats and 6 chins.  Gizmo and his son are caged together as are Pookah and her kids.  (They are now 4months old)  Loki is by himself.

On Thanksgiving, we had 14 people over for dinner. My neice and nephew wanted to see the chins and were very excited.  They are 10 and 12.  Reaching into the other cages was uneventful and all let the human kids pet them.  When it came to Loki however, I reached inside and all he did was bark and bark and bark!  I have never seen him act like that.

The next morning, I went to say hi to him and was greeted not only with a bark again but a viscious bite.  He latched on so hard he was stuck IN my finger! ::cry222::: He has since calmed down.  He has bitten in the past and has even been known to "charge" like he is going to bite but doesn't.  what is causing the behavior and what can I do about it?  Your comment would sure be appreciated.
