General Chat / Re: Chinchilla Antics

We had a funny conversation over dinner this evening.  We were talking about Ari's fixation with eating walls and Husband called her "Godchilla."  Then, we were off, imagining a chinchilla devouring a city made of popsicle sticks, etc etc.  Maybe it should be "Chinzilla" instead?  Either way, we had a good laugh.  If only we had the skill to do something for YouTube!

ok, I'm confused now...sometimes Ari's tail is curled up and sometimes its just hanging out there way behind her.  Is this curly tail you're all talking about ALWAYS curly?

It is awfully cute when its curled up.

I haven't dreamed about the chinchilla (and remembered it), but I have caught Ari dreaming.  She's sitting there sleeping and nibbling away on something - world's biggest raisin, maybe?

Re Cuttlebones...the ones I saw at the petstore had aluminum pieces to hook to bird cage. When you give cuttlebone, do you remove the aluminum, or can you get it without?

I've been wondering this about everyone myself!

At our house, my daughter LOVES animals, but I'm incredibly allergic to cats and don't have time or interest in walking a dog every day.  Hamsters and Guinea Pigs seemed boring and smelly.  I remembered that the day care center had a chin when kids were small (can you imagine a chin sitting in a cage in the middle of a class of 30 preschoolers all day, every day?!)  Did some research, spent a couple of hours at the breeder's to be sure I wouldn't be allergic, and gave daughter a christmas gift to select a chin.  It took some adjusting because we knew how to play with cats, not prey animals.  Now Ari is our chin-baby and we all love to hang out with her.   But I think we need to stick to one (ok, maybe two eventually).

I agree...suggesting a website is helpful.  Seems to me that unless their question is following up on something they don't understand about what they already read, the direction to a website is a good solution.  With my own kids, I suggest words to search on and sometimes offer an opinion about the quality of the site.  I don't think either of them has ever seen a card catalog in the library.  oops...I just dated myself!   :)

Dried blueberries are also a big hit at our house.  I try not to give them every day because of sugar in the processing.  Just one every now and then instead of a raisin.

A question about the fruit twigs...we got Ari some apple twigs and she LOVES them.  But as soon as she has munched all the bark off, she tosses the sticks aside.  Is that typical?

We love our pen.  It has a bunch of panels so it can be set up in any shape, hooked together to make a closed pen, or strung across the room to keep Ari from her latest passion - eating the wall.  One little caveat...she's been practicing jumping and one of these days she's going to make it right over the top of the fence.  You still have to keep a close eye on your chinchilla.

General Breeder Chat / Re: How many of you.....

Chinparent point of view...I love the idea of a questionnaire as a starting point for a conversation.  I also appreciated the handouts our breeder gave to me when we picked up our chinchilla.  I think it is important to include a big section on the handouts or the questionnaire about snacks/treats (or at least bold, large font cautions).  Its SOOO tempting to give another raisin when they look at you and grind their little teeth!  Yes, yes, I do know better, and we behave at our house.

Also, I found websites through my own efforts.  If you as breeders can offer chatrooms or websites that you trust on the paperwork you give to new chinparents, I think it might go a long way toward keep us communicating with people who know about chinchillas.

I did not have to fill out a questionnaire for our breeder.  We did receive a "fact sheet" about chinchillas and the breeder spent a lot of time walking through the building with us and talking.  I hope she was evaluating us in the course of the conversation.  I read up before we decided on a chinchilla, thought we knew a lot, and then found out through experience we STILL don't know how much we don't know.
Does anyone post their questionnaire on a website?

As a person who has never seen, I can attest...Jo Ann you are SO Right!  Pictures really help.  I'm saving those articles, too.

Another question about what chinchillas look like...Mika's little feet were a light pink.  Ari has very dark pink feet.  And the cutest little black toes. In fact, when we first got her, I thought her little feet were irritated, the skin is that deep a pink.  I tried searching to find out about chinchilla skin, but as you can imagine, I got lots of things about fungus and itchiness and other topics I won't even bring up on this board.

Does the skin tone have any relation to the coat color?  For a breeder or show animal is lighter or darker skin a factor?

Big and little disasters seem to be happening all over the contry these days.  My area is just starting to deal with the aftermath of all tnose Southern California fires.  Since it directly affected my neighborhood 4 years ago we in the neighborhood felt that we needed to do something to help the people who lost everything.  Several projects came up in brainstorming sessions.  I want to tell you about the one I was involved in.

We are a neighborhood full of people who like some order to their lives.  The thing most remembered from the Cedar Fire was that lack of order and how difficult it was to think or focus or keep track of things as people moved from hotel to rental ...  SO, we made a tote box full of prelabeled file folders to get the fire survivors through at least the first couple of months.  Dividers categorized the file folders into areas most likely to occur in an insurance policy like "additional living expenses" (in insurance talk, ALE), rental issues - contracts, rental insurance, lists of lost personal items, even a file folder to corral discounts that businesses offer to fema card holders.  Ziplock bags to hold all those crazy sized food receipts.  Someone even contributed envelopes and postage stamps to put in the boxes.

Anyway, I got to help assemble 500 boxes and then distribute them at the disaster center.  It was so great to give those people a little piece of control in an otherwise totally out of control time.  Now we're trying to organize to build some more.  So many more people lost homes.

Just passing the idea along to plant a seed - next time you're in the area of a disaster where people lose everything, something you can consider doing, especially if you're a disaster survivor from a prior event.
