Q & A / Re: discharge in the eye
« on: June 25, 2006, 10:30:31 AM »
I use saline to clean eyes when the get gunky,I like the tea too if it's bad.
Bad infections can cause the tear tucts not to work and I have one that gets true tears for a dry eye.

Q & A / Re: Feeding your chin.
« on: June 25, 2006, 10:26:15 AM »
Every day my chins get fresh pellets, hay and water, I use bottles.
I find pellets will take the moisture from the air and the chins will not eat when stale or damp.
I know about how much each eats and if the dish is empty during nightly cleaning I'll add a tad more, if their is some left it gets tossed, and a tad less given.
Hay they get more than they need, but it too will get dumped, as they tend to throw it all over the cage and pee on it.
I also remove their pee spot every night, and do a complete clean every week.
I alternate so every night a couple of cages get a complete.
Just like the chins I find a good routine is essential ::nod::

I have sevral very hyper chins as well, and yes they will be a tad on the lighter side.
The ones that would rather eat and sleep maybe heavier, but I doubt they are any healthier.
Genes do play a big roll, and most of the kits I've kept, I do fined they will be a bit of a diff. in their sizes even amoung sibleings.
I seem to always get from twins, a mild and a wild, and a slugger and a slim. rofl and yes the wild is usually the slim.

That's so sad, I too am sorry for your loss, but rejoice in the bond you shared.
The love of a pet is unconditional, and we do miss them so. :'(

Health / Re: New Owner Questions
« on: June 21, 2006, 11:05:22 AM »
Is there any slime or mucus around her droppings?
Still sounds like an adjustment thingy, and could be the feed from the pet shop. Does it have anything besides pellets in it?
Some/most chin feeds at pet shops are "complete chin diets", they have all treats in them as well. They can also be stale.
A problem I find here as there are not a lot on chins and the stuff in an the shelves a while.
I'd only give her a few days with out pellets, maybe a change to one of the better feeds might help at this point.
She seems quite happy to me and if after a week you see no improvemnt I'd check with a vet, and maybe have a stool smear done to check for parasites and the like.
Does she feel a nice size, can you weigh her?
Do you feel her ribs or back bone are more prominent then they should be?
Keep up with the toast it usually works, and do keep us posted.

Q & A / Re: Shedding
« on: June 16, 2006, 11:34:03 AM »
Yes do be careful, it takes practice and a chin in the mood.
I was grooming Pokie when he did a spinning jump and broke his leg.
Lani says a cat comb will do the trick, and all should be groomed at least 4 times a year.
My cat loves my chin comb, and is the only one he'll sit still for.
I find my white ones shed more than the others, and my gray not much at all.

That's like handing someone a glass of milk from the store and claim you milked the cow.
I love it Jo Anne
I guess I'm comparing it to the dog shows because they have been around so long, and I have been.
I've never been to a chin show, and the two seem so different in some respects.
I know the line of dog breeds are taken into account but it's the owner who wins and even if he hires someone else to parade the dog, the owners wear their peacock feathers like they did all the work. The Truth is they just fed the dog.
Others can breed it,train it and groom it, but the owner gets rewarded for buying the best?????????
Thanks all, yes my friend and I are beating this one to death.
We're still friends though ;)

Breeding 101 / Re: Weaning
« on: June 11, 2006, 11:56:18 AM »
At least for the first litter I like to gradually separate.
I always let Mom have runs so babies get popped into a smaller cage. That way they get used to time away right from the start.
From day one I'll pop the kits into a pouch around my neck while I clean out their cage and Mom runs. After a week they need a cage to run in too.
Then for a couple of days after I've separated, I'll let Mom& Dad see the kits again for short spells.
I seperate at 8 weeks and sell at 10-12 depending on the kit.

Q & A / Re: chew toys/ pooping

Popsicle sticks are good too, and mine love those grape vine wreaths from the craft shop.
Pine is easy to split with a hammer and chisel too.
Oh and cup holders from Tims and places are fun as well.
Tubes from the news print, or other types last a long while.

Conformation and Quality / Re: Is this still a brown Velvet?
« on: June 11, 2006, 11:38:46 AM »
Thanks Jo Anne,
I think she is one of those needing a little more understanding ;)
and yes maybe time.
It's awkward when showing her along side of the other good colored Br. Velvets, then trying to explain. :blush2:
She's a nice big girl with good shape, but does go to show how important the standard line is in getting good colors. ::nod::
