Do you have the dust bath in all the time? When I first got Cheech I was given bad advice by the pet shop to do this. Her feet got really dry and cracked this but when I took it out and let her have it a few times a week instead it cleared up.

Q & A / Re: In the same room together?...& tv questions

Chinchillas often like to be in the same room as people, it keeps them company and it's interesting for them as a lot of stuff is going on. And some of mine love to watch cartoons. rofl
Just be wary of visitors feeding them tit bits... :noway:

Hehe, I already knew that. I do play Pokemon (because I'm a big geek) and I'm going to have one.  ;)

To be honest from my experiences the collar should not be used a lot. Cheech had one when her leg was in a cast it it stops them acting like a chinchilla and makes them miserable. They can't use their hands/ arms to eat or clean and get messy etc. If it's out of joint, I would go for amputation if there is no other option. My Cheech had a drug called Meloxicam (either called Metacam of Loxicom) as a pain killer and this agreed fine with her. :)

I just hated to see her in that collar. I'm sure your chinnie would learn to cope and balance without some of the tail. It's probably irritating her as it's flopping about. Just my opinion though. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Awesome news!

Cheech was on pain killers for about 6 weeks. She's come off them now but still holds her arm up a little at times. But When bonding Cheech bit Chong's toe on his front foot and it bled a little and he held it up for ages. Long after it had healed. I think they are very protective over injured limbs.

I gave her a second level on the cage last night and she was SO happy. Poor girl has been stuck in a tiny cage for 7 weeks when she's used to the good life but I guess it did her good. Not long now 'til she's back with the family. :)

General Chat / An update on Cheech...
« on: September 07, 2010, 11:34:49 AM »
I took her to the the vets this morning and although it's healed a little wonky it's fine and doesn't need to be amputated. I so happy. ::silly::
She still has to stay on one level and have her pain killers for another week, then she can have two levels and then we start the re-bonding with the rest of her little family.

Yay. :::grins::

Q & A / Re: Simple question, simple answer?
« on: September 02, 2010, 08:43:55 AM »
Just to let you know my Chong is neutered and lives with his mate and two daughters.
I took a long time deciding whether to do it and longer finding a vet. I went and spoke to them and they used a special anaesthetic suited to chinchillas and had a special area for small animals. He must have only been in there two or three hours before I picked him up. I didn't have any problems at all. :)

General Chat / Re: pogo has a broken foot. Frecken out. Help.

Cheech is in a one level cage which is about 2 foot long and 1 foot wide. She has a box in there which she's jumping on and off. I know she's not allowed but at first I cut the top off a cardboard box for her but she just pulled it over and started climbing on it which I thought was much more dangerous. I've only just put a toy in for her about four weeks on... I'm kind of making it up as I go along with her. I want her to heal but I don't want her to go insane with boredom and she was so unhappy without a box...

No. I was given metacam. I just give Cheech her dose every day and she licks it of the syringe. I wonder if anyone else has any ides.

Hope all goes well. Make sure they give you painkillers to take home and give daily or twice daily.

No they couldn't pin where it was broken, not without having external ones. It was splinted and had a cast on for three weeks but didn't heal, although the muscle and tissue did heal. So my vet consulted with a specialist exotic vet and we have taken the cast off for three weeks to see if her using it a little stimulates it to heal. She's using it a  little more each day which I hope is a good thing. I'm taking her back on the 7th September for a final check. If it hasn't healed by then it will have to be amputated, but I'm feeling positive for the moment. She's in a one level cage and I feel so sorry for her without her family. Although I've put the cages together and they rub noses with her.

I know exactly how you feel, it made me sick to think she could loose her leg because of me. Good luck to both of our chinnies! ::nod::
