North East USA / rehoming chinchillas locally (RI)
« on: July 21, 2009, 09:32:58 PM »
Hi everyone.  I know it's been a while since I've posted and a lot has happened.  But my two girls (Lulu and Shanti) are both great, for the most part.  I think that my new ferret is stressing them out.  I have NEVER let them see or interact with each other.  I keep my ferret in the kitchen, and my chins in the living room.  However, my apartment is really one big room and I know they know about each other.

I've noticed both my chins chewing the fur off their big toes.  It makes me so sad to think I've caused them any stress whatsoever!

I would consider re-homing my girls in Rhode Island, but only to an experienced chin owner who could give them a better life than me.  I still spend several hours per day alone with them, playing in my living room, and give them the best possible care.  I only have another 6 months until I finish grad school and could get a bigger place.  The only way I could possibly let them go is to the best possible home in RI (so I can visit and check in).

Any advice, suggestions, support, is so greatly appreciated!  I'm so torn and upset about causing any upset to my animals.  Please talk to me!

So true, Jenova!  If you search past posts, Nemue has many hilarious ones about her two chins, Cheech and Chong.  It took one of my girls a year to figure it out, another one, two days...go figure.

How large is the carrier you put them both in?  From what I've read/heard that the smaller the carrier or space you put them both in to (for the smoosh method) the better.  This is because they both feel so cramped for space that neither of them exerts dominance over the other, and the whole pairing is almost equalized.  So maybe looking in to what size space/carrier etc. would be helpful?

Good luck!  Everyone on this site is so helpful  ::nod:: and keeps up to date with every post, so please take every advantage of that!

I'm by no means an expert, but the breeder I got my chin from recommended the "smoosh method" or whatever it's called...worth a try anyhow.  I'm sure there's lots of info about it on this site if you search!

Good luck! ;)

General Chat / Re: chins and pigs

Thanks for all the great advice!  I will not have them in the same cage (ever!) and will keep the new baby in isolation.  My friend is mating her piggys and I have a chance to know it from birth, I'm so excited!!

Thanks again everyone!  I will let you know when I have the new addition!

General Chat / chins and pigs

Hi everyone. I have always loved guinea pigs, and last night I fell in love all over  again!  Does anyone have any info on chins and pigs?  My girls are 1.5 and 1 year old and are sweet and gentle creatures.  Obviously I would have a separate cage for the piggy but they would be in the same room.  Thanks ahead for opinions and  facts before I decide on whether to get one or not! :::grins::

I will, but I think they'll be fine.  They've been best friends since I introduced them about four months ago.  They're both sweet and very mild-mannered! :::grins::

Thanks Harleychin.  I feel so bad for her, she slips and falls all over the place now!  I mean she doesn't hurt herself, but she's definitely unbalanced.

Hi all!  :::grins::

Now my little one (Santi) is getting frayed whiskers.  Only we have a flying saucer, so my guess is that Lulu's been chewing on them, as Joann suggested in a previous post.  Does anyone know why Lulu would do this?  She's the older, more dominant one.  Anyone know how to get them to stop?

Thank you!!

General Chat / Re: Sqeeky Toy Sound?
« on: November 17, 2008, 06:04:29 PM »
I think the noise you heard was probably the sound they make when they're upset (squeaky dog toy) and want attention (or food, or something...)
Mine will do that when they're dreaming, or if I'm late to wake up and give them their treats at the usual time.

The chirp sound sounds just like a chirp.  When mine chrip I call them my little peepers!  It's so cute, because you know they want you to love them up!   ;) Usually they chirp a few times and then rapidly in succession, the noise that begs for attention.  It's soft and calm, not panicked and shrill like the 'dog toy' noise.

At least, this is my experience!

Q & A / Re: Wheels
« on: November 08, 2008, 07:59:20 AM »
It took one of my chins about 6 months to figure it out.  The other one hopped on right away!  Jenova gives good advice on another 'wheels' post to tie a raisin to a string and hold it in front of them so they run.  use the 'search' for wheels and you'll see plenty of posts about teaching them to use wheels.

 ;)
