General Breeder Chat / Re: Color question
« on: April 16, 2007, 05:40:02 PM »
No, I understand that.  I have two medium ebonies, hetero ebonies.  I thought ALL Solid Shiny Black ebonies were Homo Ebonies.  Both genes is what makes them all the same black (not the medium, light or whatever).  If the chin is all one shade of black, nice and shiny, then it is a Homo Ebony.
A chin with the ebony gene (Hetero) will throw the gene either Light, Medium or Dark.  But there will always be a gray belly, its just a different shade but its never as dark as the Homo ebonies bellies which are the exact same color as the rest of its body.  In a dark Ebony (hetero) you can distinguish the veiling on the sides faintly but still a difference in shade.

I have not been to any shows yet, none of them are that close to me.  I would have to get too much time off to get to them and I just cant right now with work.

I have the application filled out for the MCBA I am just sending it to my breeder in CA to have her sign it and vouch for me.  I guess you need a breeder who is already in the group to sign it.

But Im dying to become a part of it already.

But I think you still can get solid ebonies from two ebony parents (hetero) since they both have the gene, then they can produce homo or hetero.  Am I wrong?  I understand what you mean by pairing a hetero eb with a standard and getting solid ebony babies.  Ive just never seen it.  But maybe it will have to be explained better to me because If the standard doesnt carry the ebony gene then how can it pass on the ebony gene to the offspring in order to make it a solid (Homo) Ebony?  Both parents would have to have the gene, showing in its phenotype or not.
Jo Ann maybe you can clarify it for me.  Am I wrong in thinking this?  I also need more experience with ebonies.  I am waiting right now to pair two medium ebonies together.  I have their cages next to each other and wont be pairing them until the end of May early June.

But I do agree with you, if the parent has ebony than it most likely will be a white ebony.  that was how I always thought of it anyway.  I was told that the ebony gene shows up almost everytime in the phenotypes.

She is adorable!  Wow you are pretty close to me.

Well then I just have to share some exciting news.  My beige female is expecting a litter any hour now, hopefully while Im still awake and not at work.  Ill keep you and everyone else updated.

I believe it would be a White Ebony because if one of the parents is Ebony, then the ebony gene will show up in the kit.  It cant be a standard x white mosaic because the ebony gene would show over that.  But this is only if the mom is ebony, hetero or homo.
If the mom was a standard then it would be a regular mosaic.  but since she is ebony, its a white ebony mosaic.  make sense?

Update on Kiwi.  I was sitting watching her today and she was streching and laying on her side and seemed uncomfortable and was nesting and what not.  So any day now Im assuming.  Probably early in the morning like her last litter.  I went in her room at like 9 am and she was just cleaning them off.

Oh Wow, She is Beautiful.  Nice rich color to her.  I just got a standard vc/ec female from Serena in BC Canada, she won first place at this past show.  I was planning on breeding her with a violet male that I bought from Ritterspach in Ohio, in hopes to get some violets and some solids.  Do you breed the offspring back to a violet (unrelated of course) in order to get the richer, darker color?  Ive read this somewhere.

And the Ultra Violet is the same as a TOV Violet.  I just wanted to know what others felt about them and the TOV Sapphires, or if they knew anything behind how they get such a dark color.  Again I thought it was breeding their offspring back to either the voilet or the sapphire (unrelated) to get a deeper color.

Do you think the MCBA will ever recognize any new mutations? How long does it usually take for them to recognize the new ones?

Thanks for the advice.

Hopefully I wont need it anytime soon though.

I know the first 24 hours are very important.  I think even the first full week is very important and can still lose kits within that time frame.  In dogs and cats i think that the first two weeks on mothers milk is when they get colostrum. I learned all about it in school.  They branded it in our brains.
The colustrum is where the babies get their maternal antibodies.  This wears off after about 4-6 weeks (in dogs and cats) and thats why we have to vaccinate starting at that age.
I dont know how long it takes for it to wear off in kits because we dont need to vaccinate them and they usually start eating pellets fairly soon while still nursing.

But thanks for the advice and suggestions on the supplement.  I hope she has a good litter.  She had 3 kits in her last one.  I dont know if it will be that many this time.  She doesnt look as large as she did last time.

It would be nice if more vets knew about chinchillas, instead of playing the guessing game.  The vet I have is wonderful.  She is affiliate with our hospital but she does cats and critters. We only do cats and dogs.

I had wanted to be one at one time, but 6 years of school was enough for me to get my bachelors and my vet tech associates.  I didnt really want to continue on for who ever knows how long.

But im content at where I am now.
And I agree, we should all be fortunate enough to have all the breeders and ranchers who know information on chins or we and chin owners would be lost.

General Breeder Chat / Thoughts on Certain Mutations?
« on: April 13, 2007, 05:42:49 PM »
I have heard names being shot around of certain mutations.  I know I would never attempt them but I wanted to get a feel out there as how you all feel about each of them and what you know about them.  They are just interesting in that they are so mysterious.
For Starters the "Blue Diamond"  supposed Sapphire x Violet x Beige combination?  I have heard that two chins that carry both the Violet and Sapphire gene can produce these.  Does this mean that a Sapphire (violet carrier) and a Violet (sapphire carrier) can produce one?  I have also heard that they hold the beige gene too, whats true and whats not true?  I know it is a very weak mix and can ruin the integrity of the chins, that the sapphire genes need to be improved on before mixing them with the violets.

Second is the "Ultra Violet" or "TOV Violet".  I read that a Violet crossed with a BV, using their offspring and bred back to an Unrelated Violet will produce a beautiful Ultra Violet, but they must be bred back to a violet to get the darker coloring?  is this true?

Same question for the "Royal Blue" or "TOV Sapphire".

Let me know what you all think about these and if you can answer any of my questions.

Thanks Jo Ann.  It will be 111 days this Sunday.  I figured she could have them early which is why I prepared ahead of time but her last litter came on her 111th day to the T.
So its hard to say.  Last I mentioned was her weight on Monday the 9th which was 848 grams.  Her weight on Tuesday the 10th was a whopping 871 grams. Weight on Wedneday was 875 grams, and on thursday was the same 875 grams.
I have yet to weight her today.

Ive never had this happen, but since you mentioned it I figured I would ask to prepare myself incase it ever happens to me.

What kind of supplements can you give the kits?  I hear things about Goats milk and I use a milk replacement I get at the hospital I work at that I used once.
What else do you know of?

Just wanted to add some things about the Metronidazole.  Its an antibiotic that is effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. These bacteria can cause bacterial peritonitis.   Giardia are parasites (protozoans) that can cause abdominal pain and chronic diarrhea. Metronidazole blocks some of the cell functions in these organisms, causing them to die, which hopefully will make the animal better, if there is no underlying problem.
Another name for Metronidazole is Flagyl.
I am a nurse at an animal hospital and we use it all the time, for dogs and cats with diarrhea mainly and who are not eating or drinking.

I agree with all Jo Ann said about dehydration.  It is soooo important to keep these guys hydrated, if you cant get Lactated Ringers from a vet (if the situation is real bad) Pedialyte and Cranberry Juice in water will help greatly.  I used Criticare with one of my chins who had impacted bowls, turns out that his intestines were actually twisted onto itself and no treatment was going to fix it, nor would surgery.
But for your case Criti care and Nutrical are wonderful at getting the nutrients back into its system.  Lactated Ringers from a vet is a great option too because it will replace all the electrolytes the chin has lost.

Yogurt is a great idea too Jo Ann!  It is a ProBiotic which replaces all good bacteria to your digestive system.
My chins love a little bit here and there too!

Im so glad your chin seems to be doing better.  We will want updates!!!

My Kiwi i think is going to have babies anytime within the next two weeks.  I have been weighing her everyday and she is gaining weight each day at least 10-15 grams a day.  Have any of you noticed an average amount of weight females gain in the last few weeks of their pregnancy?
