Breeding 101 / can my female be overaged to have kits
« on: July 10, 2010, 07:21:30 AM »
My chinchilla is about three and a half and i have had my male in her cage for a while now and she was suppose to have her kits in June.  I have read that you are suppose to breed your chinchilla about at the age of one.  Could she be to old to have kits, does she need a little more time to have the kits, or is she not able to have kits.  ::shrug::

Breeding 101 / Scales
« on: July 03, 2010, 08:25:36 PM »
I asked about my female being pregnant  before and many people responded that weighing is the best way to tell if she is pregnant.  Where is the best place to get a chinchilla scale and how much do they cost???

Ok, thanks for the tip.  I also told my daughter she had to sell her sugar gliders and hamsters so she can probably afford around $100.  I also check craigslist but they are mostly standards and if there is a different color it is about $300.  I do check craigslist everyday though.

We have 2 chinchillas of my own, my daughter is in 4-H and she wants to specialize in chinchillas.  We only have standard greys and she wants different colors.  Does anyone have a chinchilla(s) preferably not standard grey.  Also, I am making my daughter pay for it herself since she wants it so it would have to be within a range of $40 or so.  I don't think it matter what gender it is we have a male and a female and they both have their own cages that could fit about five chinchillas.  It is ok if they are a breeding pair to because, we are trying to breed our chinchillas and we would breed a breeding pair.

Breeding 101 / How do you know your Chinchilla is pregnant???
« on: June 16, 2010, 12:56:40 PM »
I wanted to breed my male and female chinchillas so, I put the male in the female's cage.  He has been in there since November and I don't know if my female is pregnant.  I thought she was going to have them the end of April so, I took the male out but she never did.  I felt her stomach and it feels like she is pregnant but she is a big female.  So, I put my male back in her cage so if she never was pregnant, she would get pregnant.  How do you tell if she is pregnant???  ::shrug::

I do know of a breeder it is Tropical Sugar Gliders.  He hand raises them.  I got one from him and he was an excellent help on how to care for the baby.  DO NOT ADOPT FROM PERFECT POCKET PETS!!!!!! :noway:  They don't breed them themselves.  They adopt them from breeding mills.  Also, they don't sell the right sized cage.  I do have two from them but i rescued them.  A lady bought the two from them and thought they came hand tamed but they didn't so, she picked them up by their tales and was afraid to feed them.  they have been though alot of abuse.  Don't make the mistake by adopting from them.  Make sure you get one from a professional breeder.
