Health / New coat of fur?
« on: December 16, 2010, 10:44:10 PM »
One of my chinchillas, George, seems to have lost fur on his back, but also there is a new coat.  There is no place where skin is exposed, (and never was, as far as I am aware) but his coat is uneven.  Is there something wrong with him?  I have a dog, Arthur, and while Arthur rarely bothers them, I wonder if it could be stress-related.  Lennie, my second (and much more timid) chinchilla has a gorgeous, even coat, and I'd think if one of them were stressed, it would be him.

George is also very small, especially compared to Lennie, if that makes any difference.

Breeding 101 / Re: Breeding housing

I  never meant them to be in the same room.  I was more asking--if I had the Chinchillas in different rooms, could I put one male in with the female, let them mate, and then put him back, the way you might do if you paid a stud fee for a stallion?

Breeding 101 / Breeding housing

So, I am just thinking about breeding chinchillas right now (even if I decide to do it it wouldn't be until next summer) but I have a question.

I have two males currently.  If I were to buy a female, would she and one of the males have to become permanent cage mates?  Or could I mate them, and then put the male back with his buddy?

Q & A / Tired Chinchillas
« on: October 08, 2009, 11:09:22 PM »
Whenever my chinchillas get out of their cage they run around like crazy.  When it's time to put them back, they make me work to catch them.  After I catch them I give them a dust bath and put them back in their cage.  Usually they immediately lie down and go to sleep like they're completely wiped out.  Is this okay?

Q & A / Saltines anyone?
« on: September 12, 2009, 09:41:40 AM »
I am a new chinchilla owner, and I don't know a lot about what they can or can't eat.  I was eating a saltine the other day, and he started begging for it, so I gave him a tiny corner (I was careful to scrape the salt off, because it seemed like it would be a lot of salt for such a tiny little creature).  He went WILD for it.  Whenever I eat a saltine in his vicinity he goes crazy and begs for it.  I only gave him the tiniest corners, so I doubt he's eaten even a whole cracker's worth yet.  He has not showed any adverse effects, but I don't want to make him sick.  Can anyone tell me whether saltines with the salt scraped off are an appropriate treat?
