Q & A / Re: Retardation or blindness?

Oh thank you both very much! I feel better now. I'm going with the not blind thing too based on the chinclub reply. So glad she's not retarded either... but  I would still love her just as much if she was ^_^

Q & A / Retardation or blindness?
« on: May 13, 2012, 08:45:59 PM »
I've had Wookie for over a month now and she is very sweet, and entertaining, but I'm concerned that she is an idiot. She may be only 6 months old or so. She runs into things all the time, or misses her target when jumping from one place to the next, and it scares her. She usually does this, runs to her cage, and carefully comes back out to repeat the same mistakes... she has run into a pole, my knee, my hand, the side of her cage, walls, and other objects... and she has fallen from the toilet seat, the top of her cage, my desk, my piano, my computer, and my computer chair... she's a total spaz and it's funny to watch but I'm still a little worried. Sometimes when I pet her she acts like she didn't see it coming and she is surprised by my touch... this is why I thought she might actually have some blindness, or maybe very poor depth perception. Is any of this normal chin behavior? She has been this way since I've had her.

She seems to be improving on particular maneuvers that she has done a few times... is it possible she is just young and not well coordinated yet?

EXTERNAL, sorry LOL! Okay so I've been giving her Tinactin in her baths and I think it may be helping but it is so hard to tell... here's another photo:

She is sleeping in this pic. The petstore said it is normal for her to sleep like she is dead lol... I didn't even disturb her with the flash or opening the cage. I did have to give her a little pet, which caused her to pick her head up and lay it back down. She has since changed positions to lay on her other side ^_^ I think I wore her out with her playtime tonight.

Thanks! I got Tinactin, and she seems to want to eat her dust bath. I won't let her because it says for internal use only... I'm sure it's not good for her to eat. She will roll in it a few times first though.

Q & A / Re: Chinchilla keeps biting me..

I have a related question...

My new chin, Wookie is biting me too but only when I rest my hand in her cage and after she sniffs it. It's like she is curious and not trying to hurt me - she lets off as soon as I pull away or say "Owie", but then goes after it again when I'm still. Is it possible she will make this a habbit, and should I be doing something to discourage it?

Thank you Marip! Is Goldbond okay? It smells minty... is that still safe?

Q & A / New Chin, new owner, missing fur, photo...

I got Wookie from the store, and I have had her for exactly a week now. I noticed this fur missing after I got her home, and it does not seem to be growing back but I don't know how to tell if it is, or how fast I will notice any coming back in. She seems to be adapting well to her new cage, environment, and to me. I'm not so sure it is stress. I can bring her back to the store and they can "buy her back" from me, keep her for observation, and then sell her to me again... but she is getting used to me already, and I don't want to put her through all that if I don't have to. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks guys,

-Angela
