Title: serious penis problem!!
Post by: chinchilla.nikki on August 05, 2008, 08:44:58 PM
I want to ask you all if you have ever heard of this type of probelm. I have a male chin that is 6 months old.  I noticed that his penis was very swollen & would not stay in the sheath.  The tip was also very discolored.  You are probably thinking "hair ring".  That is not the problem. We could not find a hair ring. His penis was also very
dry. The lower part of his abdomen also seemed distended, but may only have been that his testicles just hadn't dropped yet.  We took him to the vet.  He asked that we leave him for a few hours so that he could give him some anesthesia & get a closer look & flush him out.  Yes, he is an EXOTIC vet.  A very good one, in fact.  They called me & told me I could pick him up.  When I got there, the vet informed me that he never did see a hair ring even looking with his special equipment as well as the naked eye. He proceeded to flush out the base of the penis sack & when he did hair, dry skin & all sorts of stuff came pouring out.  No, hair was wrapped around it, though.  The swelling went down & it did go back up into the sheath.  It only looked real good for a day.  He told me to bring him back if needed & I will do that tomorrow.  The tip is now very discolored, shriveling up & will not stay in the sheath again.  I fear he may loose the tip at least.  Is anyone familiar with this?  Please respond to me.

::shrug:: I've never heard of this happening.

I'm sorry this is happening to your chin. I hope he's okay

Ok that's a weird one.  Maybe it's peyronies...a condition where the chin's penis is actually broken, which could explain why it is not going into the sheath properly.  You might ask the vet to make sure it is all intact properly.
Otherwise, you got me.

I was going to suggest the same thing as Abby, or it could be that he is just not cleaning himself, period, and the infection and time outside of the sheath has just caused too much damage.  Here is an article you might find helpful:

I believe with the help of my vet, I have found out what it is.
http://www.chincare.com/HealthLifestyle/Healing.htm#vetarticles#treatingprolapse   It appears to be a prolapsed penis.  You can read about it at the site above. The picture of it on that site looks exactly the same as my chin's.
Thanks for all your help.   By the way, he has never mated.  He was born 2-25-08. The damage must have resulted from him cleaning himself.  The chin pictured below is my chin.  The one pictured on the site is out further than my chin in comparing the pictures.  His does come out that far at times, just wasn't out as far when I took the picture.   My poor Mr. Mc Goo!!  That is his name.  There is a good possibility that he is blind.  He is a het. beige.   :'( ~JANE*

Go to the link above.  Then scroll down to "hair rings &
prolapsed penis"  photos, etc.  Then scroll down to where it says  "Treating a prolapsed penis".  I did what it says to do & was patient.  Felt like weeks!!  My little guy is looking so much better.  It is healing quicker than I thought.  It has already gone back up into the sheath & he not as grumpy. That is a definite site to bookmark for future reference. ::nod::
