::nod::  Alright!  I wasn't sure if they were each based on a topic like toys you can make or how to do introductions or... whatever.  :)

It was exciting!  With how thrilled I was with the 2nd Places, I told my friend that I know I would have wept if any of them had placed 1st.   ;D

The goal for me is to get most of the chinchillas I currently have sold, including the 9th guy.  I'm trying to pear down to just 6 that will be pet only and are unlikely to be shown.  But his new owner (*crossing fingers*) is more than welcome to show him.   :::grins::

General Chat / CA State Claiming Show
« on: November 19, 2007, 11:23:37 PM »
I was finally able to make it out to my first show!  I attended the CA State Claiming Show in Santa Nella, California, on November 17th.  I took 14 chinchillas with me, intending to show only 8 of them.  I ended up adding a 9th chin when all of the big ranchers were so impressed by his size for his young age and by his silver coloring.  And a 10th was shown by his breeder since she was at the show and figured she might as well add him to her line-up.  I ended up earning four Third Place ribbons and four Second Place ribbons.  The other two chins got Fourth Place, one of which was that 9th little guy that I knew was too young to show (which is pretty much exactly what Gary Beubauer said during his comments) but that everyone else insisted I enter.  I was just glad that none of mine were taken off the table by the judges!

I snapped a few pictures of the judges deliberating over the winners as well...  Enjoy!

Reserve Grand Show Champion was a Homo Ebony owned (but not bred by) Twin's Chins.  Grand Show Champion was a TOV Ebony bred by Chin Niche.

Q & A / Re: Temperature
« on: November 19, 2007, 12:20:05 PM »
I doubt you would be able to tolerate the cold temperatures by the time it would be too cold for the chinchillas.  Ideally, you don't want it to be below 45 degrees.

I like Calf Manna too, but I figure NutriCal is a lot easier for her to find and she doesn't have to buy a huge bag of it at a feed store.   ;D

Some also sleep with their eyes open.  This generally doesn't happen when they feel completely comfortable in their surroundings, so you may notice his eyes being closed more the longer you have him.  :)

Agreed.  Most vets do not tell you to use probiotics.  I have had them tell me it's a good idea when I mention it to them, though.   ::)

Are these chats that are organized around a specific topic?

General Chat / Re: Chinchilla Names
« on: November 14, 2007, 09:48:29 PM »
Clyde (Standard male), Avra (Black Velvet female), Kent (Standard male), Kalli (Mosaic female), Z (Mosaic male), Mabel (Black Velvet female), Harold (Beige male), Henna (Dark Tan female), Nougat (Homozygous Light Tan male), Gwyn (Mosaic female), Flower (TOV Mosaic male), Lenga (Medium Tan female), Delilah (Dark Ebony female), and Kora (Ebony White female).

I have a Tan White male that I've decided to keep, but I haven't decided on a name for him yet.

For the chins I've had who have passed, there was Johan (Light Tan male), Bonnie (Standard female), Koontz (Dark Ebony male), Krishna (TOV Dark Ebony male), Radha (Ebony female), Sage (Beige male), Sepia (Beige female), Zeus (Homozygous Beige Violet male), Hera (TOV Mosaic female), and Kuma (Dark Ebony male).

And, of course, there have been many many many babies, some of whom I named and others that I didn't so that their new mom and/or dad could decide on the perfect name.

Are they eating the same food that they had been eating before you got them?  You might want to give a small amount of NutriCal to help boost the amount of calories they are consuming until the stress has diminished.

I personally do not supplement unless I have a pregnant or nursing female.  I find that a high quality pellet and high quality hay provides them with everything they need.

Completely understandable!  Make sure you're saving up enough...  You should expect to spend between $250 and $350 for your initial costs NOT including the costs of the chinchilla(s).  These aren't cheap pets.  :)  Once you've gotten everything you need for your chinchilla, the maintenance costs are considerably lower.  Then you can expect to spend around $25-$45 a month for everything you need for just two.

Please make sure that you don't get a male and a female.  If you've never owned chinchillas, starting off with breeding is really not in your (or the chinchillas'!) best interest.
