Perhaps his cage could be moved to another room where he wouldn't find the female to be such a temptation.

Nougat and Gwyn are ON HOLD!

Between Christmas and New Year's, Nougat and Gwyn will be making their way to Southern California. Transportation to the San Diego area may be available for a greatly reduced rate at this time.

Their names are Sandy and Sandy?  That must be...confusing...   rofl

Congratulations!  It is very difficult to sell chinchillas.  Finding good buyers isn't as easy as you'd think...  But it sounds like you found a fantastic forever home for your babies!   ::silly::

Health / Re: chin w/eye problem

You may check with the vet to see if there are drops available instead of an ointment.  This may help to keep the fur from clumping as severely.  It's VERY hard to get the ointment out, but it can be done...  You just have to kind of hold a warm, moist cloth on the eye area so that it gets softer and then work at it.  It takes time and very few chinchillas will just sit there for the process.

Q & A / Re: why is he doing this
« on: December 03, 2007, 03:02:40 PM »
One of the things that I do with my chinchillas and encourage people who buy chinchillas from me to do is to sit with my hands facing palms up by the cage door.  I let the chinchillas come to me and crawl onto my hands.  It takes time and they will generally get very nervous and jump right back in the cage after climbing onto my palms, but (with time and patience) they will start to jump onto my hands and will allow me to move my hands and arms so that I can transport them for play time.  I try to use this method instead of chasing them around the cage and grabbing them, since this frightens them and makes them associate me with something negative.

Yesterday, in fact, I had some people over to see the chinchillas.  I had one of the cage doors open to try to encourage some of the chins to come out and one of my boys who is normally VERY shy determined that he wasn't so shy anymore!  Anytime one of us put our hands up to the cage, he would jump right out onto them, ready to play!   ;D

This probably isn't what you want to hear, but...

Whenever you get a second chinchilla, there is ALWAYS the possibility that they will not get along and will not be able to be housed together.  From what you are describing, I would personally determine that they were not going to get along and would keep them separated.  Castrating your male does not guarantee that his personality will change to the point where he will get along with the female.  He may still have a dominant personality and she may still have a dominant personality and getting two dominants to get along is very difficult, if not impossible.  If this were me and my chinchillas, I would purchase another large cage and have two cages with two happy chinchillas who live separate lives forever.

Well, this feature DEFINITELY isn't working for me.  I'm not sure if anyone else is having the same problem, but my "money" is only going up if I add more to it and not automatically with the 2% interest.

Q & A / Re: I need more hay...
« on: November 27, 2007, 08:58:35 AM »
The type of hay that you feed is primarily determined by the type of pellet you feed.  If you feed an alfalfa based pellet, you should feed loose timothy hay.  If you feed a timothy based pellet, you should feed loose alfalfa hay.

You're still not able to get a very accurate rate on a chinchilla that's being asked to hold still on a scale.   ;D

Q & A / Re: Wanting out...
« on: November 26, 2007, 08:56:19 PM »
I would recommend opening his cage as much as possible WITHOUT letting him out.  This will let him know that, just because the door is open, that doesn't mean he gets to play.  Also, make sure that his play time is at the same time every day.  Chinchillas respond best to routine.

He may never like for you to hold him.  Chinchillas, in generally, are not cuddly pets.  However, you were on the right track in the beginning!  And nothing says that you can't keep doing what you had started.  :)

Best of luck!

You might want to put them in something to try to keep them still.  You can use a small cardboard box and subtract the weight of the box to get the weight of the chinchilla.  Afterwards, give a treat as a reward for them being so good and letting you get an accurate weight.

"All money stored in the bank gains interest at a rate of 2% per day"

Is this feature still working?  Maybe I'm just not paying close enough attention, but I'm pretty sure that I'm not getting 2% a day on the "money" I have banked.  I should be getting over 5,000 a day and that doesn't seem to be happening...

Chit Chat / Re: Happy Thanksgiving

A few hours before midnight, but...

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!   ::silly::

I'm thankful that I am happy and in good health, as are my family and friends, and that I have a job in a field I enjoy.  I'm thankful for the animals that elect to share their lives with me and the fact that they all appear very happy and healthy.  I'm thankful that, each day, I find at least one thing to smile about.  And so much more!

I'm not sure when I'll show again, seeing as how I'm breaking up my breeding pairs and sticking with pet-only for awhile.  But thank you!   :::grins::
