Health / Stew acting odd.
« on: June 05, 2010, 03:55:39 AM »
First I would like to say we just had a new baby! Not sure of gender yet...but aparently Steve wasnt Steve!

But on a darker note....Stew...Steve's mate (?) is now acting strangly...while cleaning his cage we put him in with the girls. All of a sudden he was making warning barks and then when my boyfriend looked one of the girls was on top of him holding him down...now he is very quiet and barely moving. At first we thought he was dead. His mate is tending to him along with the baby, but what on earth could have happened to him????

Breeding 101 / Need answers ASAP
« on: November 14, 2009, 07:15:49 PM »
Sophie appears to be in labor. Her hindquarters are a bit wet though and I saw a few peices of bedding that had a tiny bit of blood on them. Is this ok? She also seems to be progressing really slow...how long should I wait in case I need to contact the vet?? Eep! This is the honestly first time I've ever been HOME during! I am probably more distressed than she is!!

I Love My Little Chinchilla......

I love my little chinchilla, she makes my house a home.
She always is my best friend, I never feel alone.
She makes me smile, she makes me laugh,
She fills my heart with love ...
Did some breeder breed her, or did she fall down from above?

I've never been a breeder, seen life through their eyes,
I hold my little chiny and just sit and criticize.
I've never known their anguish, I've never felt their pain,
The caring of their charges, through snow or wind and rain.

I've never sat the whole night through, waiting for babies to be born,
The stress and trepidation when they're still not there by dawn.
I've never felt the heartache, of a little life in my hands,
This darling little baby, who weighs but 50 grams.

Should you do that instead of this ....or this instead of that,
Alone you fight, and hope one day, he'll grow up big and strong,
and bring joy to another being, and make a house a home,
You know it's all just up to you, you'll fight this fight alone.

Formula, bottles, heating pads, you've got to get this right,
Hand feeding for this tiny guy, throughout the day and night.
In your heart you know, you're almost sure to lose the fight,
to save this little baby, but God willing ... you just MIGHT.

Day one he's in there fighting, you say a silent prayer,
Day two & three, he's doing well, with lots of love and care.
Day four & five ... he's still alive, your hopes soar to the heavens,
Day six he slips away again, dies in your hands day seven.

You take this little angel, and bury him alone,
With aching heart and burning tears, and an exhausted groan,
You ask yourself "Why do this? ... why suffer all this pain?"
But see the joy your kits bring... it really self explains.

So, when you think of breeders and label them with "greed",
Think about what they endure to fill another's need.
When you buy a chinchilla and with your precious dollars part,
You only pay with money ... we pay with our heart.

Breeding 101 / Sasha (i think..) had a baby
« on: March 30, 2009, 07:18:48 PM »
Well Sasha and Sophie were in the cage together when we found one baby, however the baby didnt survive..it didnt quite seem very well formed either. And on top of that my room mate apparently opened the stop between the boys and girls and apparently one of the girls.. (she cant remember which...) was breeding with one of the boys.. (again middle of the night and she doesnt remember which..or why she even let them get near each other!)..so basically one of my girls had a baby who didnt survive and the other is very well pregnant. Ugh...any advice on the stillborn baby...and the pregnant momma? I have calf manna and a whole grain supplement that lonestar puts out and both my girls are on it right now...and I am keeping track of weights now to figure out who is pregnant...
