thanks for all the help everyone  ;)

they have loads of toys and chew stuff but alas i think they enjoy the attention they get when i'm trying to get them to stop eating stuff.  i take it there's no deterrent but i will try the No, Smokie.

thanks again

Q & A / how to stop chewing?
« on: November 21, 2010, 03:45:37 PM »
my chinchillas are slowly destroying my room; they eat the walls/doors/carpet/furniture/wires and anything else.  i have them out for hours every night and it's not possible to move them to another room.  is there anything i can use to stop them eating stuff?  particularly the carpet and windowframe!

any help would be great.  also i live in the uk so please bear that in mind x

Q & A / Re: matted fur under chin/throat

i've got all the matting out  :::grins::

basically since i posted this problem i've been at it every day and bless him, he's been very good to stand there and let me tug at his chin!  i've made a point of not grabbing him and letting it be his choice for me to 'groom' him and now he is super friendly!

problem solved and it's made him a lot tamer.

he's got a water bowl which is how i reckon it gets wet, he crashes through it sometimes!  i know they are meant to have bottles but the waters so hard here they keep getting all crusted up with limescale.  it is pretty solid, i just tried cutting it :(
i think i'm going to have to take him to the vet which he won't like at all.  wish i could cut it!
i deffo don't want to yank it out as the throat is quite a tender area.

problems!

Q & A / Re: Please help me with new chin owner trouble!
« on: November 02, 2010, 05:00:16 PM »
I had one chin originally (she's still my favourite!!) but got her a buddy because it seemed so sad for her to be alone.  Now they are permanently squashed up against each other.  You might find your chin settles once she's got a friend as her cage won't be so lonely!
With regards to getting chins in, well i've got different tactics!
Maggie my rescue chin actually just goes straight into her cage as soon as i want her away (she's a mind reader), smokie insists on circling the room twice to show that she's boss  :) then goes in and Yuri puts himself in as soon as i put the chair up to the cage (his cage is quite high up).  To get to this stage with them I discovered that it's best not to have to chase them into their cage, i just let them out for hours so that they are happy to put themselves back to bed. I think routine is the secret.  Every night they are out a couple of hours and then they go away to their cage, the safe place where i won't pester them.  With yours, it might be an idea to make his cage a 'safe' zone where you don't chase him out of it or even try to stroke him, make it the nice food zone and quiet place and then he'll love it there.

Good luck!

Q & A / matted fur under chin/throat
« on: November 02, 2010, 04:49:23 PM »
i've just found some matted fur on my chinnies throat... he's not keen on getting handled and i'm worried i hurt him trying to cut it out.  he lets me pull at it a bit so was wondering is there anything i could put on it to make it easier to get the matt out?  my friend suggested conditioner but i was hoping someone could suggest something definitely non toxic!

Health / wonky ear
« on: August 07, 2010, 05:16:38 AM »
Hi, my young boy chinnie has just appeared with a 'wonky' ear... it's not as uprigth and conical as the other one.  Tried putting it up, in case it'd just gone inside out, but it's still a bit crumpled, like someone's sat on it.    ???

This is probably nothing to worry about but just in case, any thoughts?

ps is still the same colour and the other one and he's his usual perky self.

thanks

Yes i must say the vet was 'Spectacular'.  She told me the last chin they had was just going in to get its nails clipped and that it died of shock!!!  By that point you can imagine how i was feeling having my little chinnie there  ???

ps got a nice £100 bill for it too!

yeah think it's going to be a teddy bear!  i keep them all close together so there probably would be fighting :(

wish i had more space for more rescue chins.

thanks for that.

My youngest chinchilla won't come out of his cage before 8pm.  I'm not kidding, before 8pm it's like he's terrified of me.  After 8pm he's dancing to come out and jumps into my hands.   :::grins::

Was happy going back in his cage until I moved and since then never wants to go back in.  I use a box with a hole in it as a sandbath so he's out he goes in and out of that a couple of times and when I want to put him away I just wait until he goes for a bath, put my hand over the hole and move the box to the cage.

This link below shows a sort of 'human' equivalent of this trick!

Q & A / Cage buddies
« on: July 29, 2010, 04:52:26 PM »
Hi, I had a female chin and was worried she was lonely and got her a female buddy and they love each other to bits.

Then I got a boy and as some will have seen from my recent post I'm now worried that he's lonely as he's kept seperately (right now the two females are asleep on each other and he's just standing around.   :(

I have decided not to get him castrated on advice and not wanting to take the risk but was wondering if I could get him a friend.  Would he fight if I got him a male friend?  I thought they might fight because there's females in the same room (but different cage).  Is this the case?  Or, if I could find one (on the sheer offchance) a rescue neutured female or would he just be a pest to her then as he hasn't been done?

ps why hasn't anyone invented 'chinchilla protection pants' yet???    ;)
