General Chat / Safe and Unsafe woods. (question)
« on: December 23, 2014, 01:47:53 AM »
Hi there! :)

I understand most the safe and unsafe woods (hands down)
but....
one has me in confusion...

Douglas-Fir tree. Come to find out it's "unsafe" yet, I am finding tons of CHINCHILLA toys made out of that wood!!!

I've had a chinchilla for three years and he's had many toys now from "Douglas-Fir" and today I was researching and never noticed that and found out it's a toxic wood to them.

Let me tell you, I feel like the worst person in the WORLD!!!!! Because he is my baby and I will do anything and everything to keep him happy.

Now, it confuses me because he's NEVER been ill or acted ill or hurt. :0 So is it a toxic wood?

So I guess I am asking for other thoughts and what you know?
Thanks.

General Breeder Chat / BABIES <3
« on: October 14, 2014, 10:39:31 PM »
Hello,

So my chinchilla had two babies and they are now 3days, however the runt is having some issues with mom. She is able to nurse, but mom tends to push her away after that. Mom favors the other baby more. Mom also cleans the babies like normal but she seems to bite the runt and it tends to scream a lot. I am not sure what to do, I don't want to have to take her away from mom but at the same time I do worry a lot.
Any advise will be amazing!!!!
Thank you so much.

Breeding 101 / Re: signs of labor.

Thanks so much,
It's just kinda odd to me, because she jumps around a lot (has no levels anymore) and the cage is totally baby-proof. However, she really likes to stand up, like she is stretching her tummy, I haven't noticed her laying on her side to much, just more stretching then anything. When the babies are very active she does the bark type of sound.
I was wondering if they may do that during labor and giving birth.

Breeding 101 / signs of labor.

Hello,
My girl is getting close to having her babies! I was wondering what signs of labor they give? I understand it depends on different chinchillas, but any help would be great!
Thanks.

I have baby proofed the cage, and taken the wheel out already, she just gets a little run around the room. :) Do you have any suggestions on the brand of food scale? Or will pretty much just any do? :)

She lets me just put my hand on her belly. I don't push it or anything like that, I just put it there to feel the babies move. <3
She's such a sweet chinchilla. Then of course, I give her loves (rub behind her ear or under her chin) and a treat. :)

Yeah, I'm not really sure when she is due. I adopted her and her old owner was like btw.... but he didn't tell me how far along she was or anything. She's had litter before, but I don't know how many, once again he didn't tell me. (sigh)  but she seems to be very happy, but at the same time slightly uncomfortable because she picks at her side a lot.

Do you have any idea or clue to tell how many their might be, have yours given signs or do you just wait and see.

Hey all,
My chinchilla is getting close to having her kits, and of course her behavior is changing. Although, she knows how to confuse a person! One day, she isn't really wanting to move around, the next shes playing and just okay. I was wondering what your chinchillas who are close might do and how their behavior changes. :)

Time is the key. However; it'll help if you spend extra cuddle / love time with him.  :)

I am sure you have already checked, but have you made sure they are different genders?

Hello,  ::wave::

I just joined and I am a chinchilla pet owner...and now a breeder....I guess (just adopted a breeding pair). Each of my chinchillas have their own cage, well the breeding pair share their cage, and I now have a nursery cage.
They have probably to many toys, I have two mini dressers filled with chinchilla things. (but that's okay
::clapp:: )

Anyways, I just want to help, learn, and get to know other chinchilla owners and what they do! :)

I am glad you were able to save him! I have had a couple scary moments like that myself!
They are tricky little things. My baby girl was about 4months old and she was SCREAMING! I jumped outta bed, to find her little toe caught in the cage door! To this day I have no real clue how she did it. But I was up all night just trying to calm her and make her feel better and safe. The next day we went to the vet, she cut her skin and broke her toe but was in great health other than that, and the vet said I spoil my chinchillas to much. (silly vet...no such thing as over-spoiling)
The real thing with them I find, is that they just have to be watched and caged checked everyday!
I hope he is doing well and growing up good! :)
