Q & A / Re: Winter temperatures
« on: November 27, 2013, 02:49:39 PM »
I am also wondering about  this as I just moved into a condo. Their room is unusually colder than the rest of the house. Its a second bedroom. Im assuming its an outside wall. seems to be slightly colder near the windows but I don't feel much wind from it.  They have wire cages.  I have to keep the door to their room closed as my girlfriend has a cat...that jumps on everything imaginable.  There is a heating vent in the room as we have central air and heat.  Will this affect them in an adverse way?  Theres no way they can be kept I nthe main area as too many doors and things they can damage if they get out.

Health / Is it safe to spray Glade or air wick in a room occupied by chins?
« on: November 27, 2013, 02:22:26 PM »
Hi I have kind of a unique situation here. My girlfriend and me just moved into our own condo and well she hats the "smell of them" .  ::) I clean the cages regularly and do not smell anything until the cages need to be cleaned.  But anyway she goes and sprays the stuff in their room.  I ask her to not do that in there and she just gets all defensive and crap....Anyway is it safe to spray that in their room? It is a pretty small room that contains only the chins and the cages.

even having a baby escaping is nerve wracking. You never know if you will find them alive. luckily When Bonnie escape Raisin barked and bonnie answered her mother's call allowing me to find her wedged between a computer.  The next time she escaped I knew exactly where she was

Q & A / Re: Oldest chin is missing hair on 2 sides of his tail

These pills were formulated for cats and dogs but  there is no such pill for the chins. the pills are intended to be ingested by the dogs and cats in whole, but for a chin a specific amount has to be squirted into the mouth. I choose to put 2 squirts on a shredded wheat as I don't want to end up getting the serum into his lungs

That wont get rid of possible microbes present on the store shelves  There's no visible soil on the block. I'm just unsure of the possibility of microbes that might be present in the store.  I cleaned one of these a decade ago but forgot how exactly I did it.

Q & A / pumice chew block
« on: May 02, 2013, 12:32:32 PM »
Hello all

I just have a question regarding cleaning a pumice chew block. They are exposedto the shelves in the store and I like to make sure my chins toys are clean before I give them to them.  If I submerge the pumice block into boiling water and pat it dry will microbes grow inside of the center?

General Chat / Re: Chinchilla acting too aggressive towards people
« on: May 02, 2013, 12:10:12 PM »
Wow that's odd indeed.  I have not encountered this.  I have encountered my chins acting more shy when I have someone over visiting but they don't attack anyone. My guess would be that the chin may smell the scent of a pet on whatever person he is attacking.  the ones that he attacks, do they have a pet at home?

Sorry to hear of the loss of a little one. A chin is a hard thing to lose at any age.

As for housing I would definitely  consider separate cages until u know for sure the sexes and whether or not they will be compatible.  I have 2 males and 2 females each in a separate cage but next to each other.  they do talk to each other from cage to cage.  Although its mostly the 2 youngest that seem to talk to each other more. Although the youngest will still start chatting when I am petting the mother.

I feel your pain. When a chin passes...it hurts real bad.  Its been almost 11 years since I lost Puff and almost 2 years since I lost Frisbee.  The pain has dulled considerably but will stick with me forever.  I just do the best I possibly can to take the best of care of my current chins and devote a lot of time to them

Im so angry my ex made me get rid of Frisbee's fur  ::chinmad::   but I found some more of hers as I still have her bed that I put into the wash after her passing and it had lots of fur matted to it when it came out ::chinhappy:: so I win :)

Ah sorry for the delay in my reply. I lost my password to the forum as well as the forum site due to a hard drive crash. Any way the vet said theres no doubt that hes been pulling the hair out himself. He gave me some meds with omega 3 acids in them to give him. I just have to puncture the tablet and put 2 squirts onto a shredded wheat.  I noticed he chews his tail more when he doesn't get the meds. Its likely dry skin asteh vet said theres no indication of a fungus.

Q & A / Oldest chin is missing hair on 2 sides of his tail
« on: September 14, 2012, 11:05:54 PM »
Hello.

Last night I noticed Chip had a patch of hair missing from his tail on both sides, directly opposite of each other.  There is no redness or any scaling. he does not have a history of fur chewing. I have had him for a little over 10 years.  he has no signs of chewed fur on hsi body. Its just the coarse tail hair that is missing. I'm brining him to the vet this comming Friday. Could he be doing this from stress or boredom? I'm very worreid about him.
