Q & A / bonding 4 chinchillas....
« on: June 26, 2015, 01:39:50 PM »
Hi I recently lost my 9 year old boy leaving behind his 6 month old friend so I brought his 3 month old half brother, They are very slowly starting to tolerate each other whilst out for a little play time (only 10 minutes or so) the older one Scamp initially lunged a few times at Pickle but that has stopped now and they have started the dominance humping... I know this is all part of the process into hopefully bonding... BUT I was won over by some twins who had just been born and are due to be old enough to come home in September.. my question is has anyone had quads living together before?? I know they live in hundreds in the wild and  my cage is massive and easily big enough for the 4 and I have extra water bottles, food etc but I just wondered once the other two are bonded will they except another 2 babies??

Health / Broken incisor tooth
« on: April 15, 2015, 03:21:59 PM »
Hi, my chinchilla has a broken bottom incisor tooth.. its hard to explain but it has pretty much cracked from top to bottom, he has been to the vets and he said it was best to leave it and let it grow out and has been prescribed metacam for the next few months to help manage the pain but his weight is still dropping and I am at a loss as what to do.. has any one every heard of a chinchilla having a filling? as obviously the pulp of the tooth is exposed so will be very sore :( he is still picking at his food but crumbling it alot.
Have started giving him critical care to help him but he hates it and forcing a syringe into his mouth when he has a broken tooth is obviously not the best way to go. On his last vet visit the vet said he isn't too concerned about his weight at the moment but I don't want him to lose any more.
He grinds his teeth still and I can see a small red sore.
Are there any better pain meds available or shall I get the tooth removed?
please anyone who has had experience with this any help would be greatfully recieved

Health / Tear duct flush
« on: February 06, 2015, 11:28:42 AM »
Hi, Has anyone had their chinchilla's tear ducts flushed? my 1 and a half year old tan male has got a slight white discharge which is being treated with eye drops, antibiotics, and metacam for the last two weeks.. to me it hasn't cleared it up so awaiting for vet to call me back. The vet said that it maybe his teeth roots pushing on bone near tear ducts or it could be a deep routed infection which they can clear out by flushing them??  I am waiting for phone call from vet as  I want him booked in for an xray to confirm.
Until he started his medication his weight was stable but now he has dropped 50 grams since being on it.
Anyone been through this? I lost a young chinchilla to malocclusion 2 years ago and he is my elderly chins new buddy.. after going through alot of treatments with the last one I am very reluctant to put this one through weeks of meds without the xray.
If xray confirms any root elongation I won't be letting them wake him up as I think its an awful thing to go through.. but just wondered if anyone else has had this and had a happy ending  :-\
