Never mind--- he wasn't rejected. His mom is still licking him, but he isn't doing well. Why is this?

Other Pets / Puppy rejected by mom
« on: May 20, 2014, 11:01:45 AM »
My friend's dog just gave birth to 11 puppies last week. One died, and now another of the puppies (the runt) was rejected by his mom. They're bottle-feeding him, but it isn't looking good. What could cause this and how can it be fixed?
Note: if it's relevant, the puppies are a German shepherd/pit bull mix.

General Chat / ducks.

Two things:
1. I recently gave Doodle a rubber duck as a prop for pictures. He tried to eat it. So note to chin parents: don't give chinchillas ducks.
2. I made Doodle a Facebook page!! Check it out :) https://www.facebook.com/Snickerdoodlethechinchilla

General Chat / Re: Vinegar
« on: May 05, 2014, 08:28:37 AM »
I use a 1:1 ratio of white vinegar to water. I've been doing this for almost 2 years. Works just fine and it's totally safe and so cheap!

Q & A / Re: Best hay feeder to use?

I use a carrot-shaped bowl. It keeps the hay in quite nicely.

Health / Re: My chinchilla has a small cut... I'm highly concerned
« on: March 23, 2014, 08:04:07 PM »
Maybe posting a picture would help. When you touch the wound, how does she react?
Don't feel guilty. Chinchillas are curious and silly little animals <3 Just monitor her carefully, make sure she's eating, drinking, and pooping. My Doodle has actually bled multiple times from wounds and has been fine (hope I don't sound like a bad chin mom--- he just has very very dry feet and sometimes they crack :( ). Also, just a tip: you might want to consider making a room chinchilla- proof. I personally do something CRAZY (I live in a 1200 sq. ft. apartment in NYC): I set up a dog run gate in the living room. Doodle and I play in that tiny area. I cover it with a bedsheet because chins can jump super high!!
Anyway, good luck with your little girl, and welcome to the community :)

Health / Re: Nose Whistle. WHAT!
« on: March 23, 2014, 08:04:23 AM »
He wipes his nose more frequently than he did when he was a baby, but this started months ago. So I'm not panicking.

Health / Nose Whistle. WHAT!
« on: March 21, 2014, 10:55:10 AM »
Doodle has had a slight nose whistle since he fell on his face several months ago. He's been totally fine, so I'm not worried --- it's actually kind of adorable. But I'm wondering: what happened to his nose that was so horrible that this happened?

Q & A / Homemade treats??
« on: March 17, 2014, 10:33:30 AM »
I think I've posted this before, but I was wondering if there would be a way to make homemade chinchilla treats with oats, hay, and bananas or strawberries or other fruits that are chin- safe when they're dried. If the ingredients are safe, wouldn't it mean that it's possible to make a homemade treat?

Health / Re: Matted fur and possible pain around rear leg
« on: March 17, 2014, 10:30:39 AM »
It does look like fur chewing. Snickerdoodle has that as well. We noticed that when we bathe him more often, his fur chewing lessens. How often do you bathe your girl?
GrayRodent tends to know more than I do, but I'd like to suggest that what you heard was a squeal of fear or discomfort. Snickerdoodle does not like being touched on his leg where he chews his fur. Though I do recommend keeping track of her water/food intake and poops, because I believe fur chewing can indicate underlying issues as well. From where did you get her?

Q & A / Re: Hoping to make a chinchilla skin salve
« on: February 08, 2014, 09:55:03 PM »
Neem oil is often used is cold-process lye soaps for dogs which is why I listed it :)
Do you think I can melt some beeswax with some aloe vera and make a salve? The beeswax would seal in the moisture, right? :)
