Title: A redish pee
Post by: Hoppinchins on November 16, 2009, 10:40:48 PM
I had my chins in the bathroom one last time while my boyfriend and i were switching the shelves and saucer around in there cage. When i went to get them, i noticed that they peed. One was clear and the other pee looked redish. I would say it looked like blood though. It looked kinda orange to. It just looked weird. So for the past too days i have been giving my chins just hay and some papaya. I have a feeling that if one of there pee looks like that, that something bad is wrong with one of them.

::silly::  I would say it is time to get your little one to the vet.  It could be a urinary tract infection, which would require some meds, if that is what is wrong.

In the meantime, I would use Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice mixed 1/2 and  1/2 with water.

Are you giving alfalfa hay?  Alfalfa will turn chinchilla urine red.

clear pee sounds weird to me ... isn't chinchilla urine supposed to be kind of brown-ish?

I'll have to check what kind of hay it is tonight when i get home. So what color should their pee be? I'll take them to the vet when i get acco in town. Leaving in less than a week to go to fl.

I've seen all shades of pee from yellow to dark red.  It varies from chinchilla to chinchilla and with diet.  However if your chinchilla's urine changes color and/or your not feeding alfalfa based pellets or hay a vet trip is needed.

How long should they have the cranberry juice? I'm not sure if there pee did change color bc i didn't know what color it was before. I just fig it had changed color. I feed them the oxbow western hay which is Western Timothy Hay and oxbow chinchilla delex pellets, which is alfalfa based.

::silly::  I didn't know that.  Goes to prove, you can learn something new every day!   ::nod::

I usually keep them on in for a couple of weeks ... it tends to help flush out the system.
If I am giving it because they are dehydrated, (backbone beginning to show and weight loss) I keep it up until they have gotten all or most of their fluid back into their systems and are looking healthy again.  WARNING: They do tend to like the taste, so you may have to wean them off of it by decreasing the amount of cranberry juice and increasing the amount of water over a period of a week or two, until you get them back to plain water again.
