General Breeder Chat / Has your GSC produced kits that have won GSC
« on: November 25, 2006, 01:02:12 PM »
What is the secret to getting your GSC to produce chins which are also capable of being GSC?
I recently asked a very experienced breeder this question & he said it is several factors of which the main one is the female must be high quality too.
What are the other reasons & would those of you who have bred your own GSC mind telling me how long it took you & whether or not your GSC has produced kits which also got GSC?

General Breeder Chat / Line Breeding
« on: November 15, 2006, 12:19:23 PM »
I have noticed that a lot of the successful breeders will practise a degree of line breeding & are of the opinion that the line should be kept tight.
I know this is not for the novie breeder to undertake but how do you feel about this?

Eventually my herd will mostly consist of chins from 3 top breeders who all have  relatively big set ups & have been breeding & doing very well at the shows for a long time.
Some of these animals are older so although they may be from the same breeder come from different lines.
I am wondering if you found your initial lines tended to come from the same breeders & how have you developed that over the years?
Do you prefer to go back to those breeders or do you try to find animals not from the lines you have?

General Breeder Chat / With pair breeding would you still buy new chins in?
« on: November 15, 2006, 11:34:05 AM »
I was not intending on buying in any new chins next year as with only pair breeding I have as many males as people using much bigger set ups.
Next year I intend to show every kit I get & keep the best kits to eventually pair together when they are old enough.
Do you think I am misguided in thinking I don't need to buy in more stock at this point?

If you have a chin which does really well at the shows & gets 'Show Champ' & he has a litter brother who is not quite as good as him would you keep them both to breed from to see which produces the better quality kits or would you sell the chin which took the lesser ribbon?
I ask as I have been told  by a few experienced people that sometimes the litter brother to the 'Show Champ' might produce the better kits & wonder if you have experienced that in your litters?

General Breeder Chat / How is litter size decided?
« on: November 13, 2006, 07:39:53 AM »
I have recently got a very good male from a very good breeder because he is a prolific breeder who has a tendency to sire litters of triplets & has sired  so many kits in a short space of time that the line would have been overpopulated if they kept him longer. :2funny:
Of course, I am absolutley over the moon  :::grins::
Anyway, I have been thinking about him throwing the litters of triplets despite being with 4 different females  at any given time & was wondering if any of you  who have kept records for years  have noticed whether certain males produce the same size litters & how do you think litter size is decided?
I have one female who is 12 now & retired here but my friend kept her for years & she told me she only ever had one litter a year containg a single kit & she did the same here producing a single kit a year so I am interested to know what you think?

I have noticed a lot of the bigger breeders seem to sell their older breeding females on when they get to about six so they can make room.
This usually happens after the show season has finished & I was wondering if it is the same in the USA.
At what age do you generally move your older breeding females on & for what reasons?
If you have a few that are superb do you hang on to them & at what age would you retire them?
I am of course delighted as I have recently got some older breeding females from someone who does very well at the shows & I am chuffed to bits that they are now esconced in my unit ;)

How do some people manage to produce those extra wide chins?
I have chins that are the right shape & thick through the neck  but I have noticed a few people have managed to produce chins that are  really exceptionally wide & absolutely gorgeous & wonder how have they managed to do that?
Did they pick out the widest chins to work with?
I think that is a part of the answer but there is a lot more to it which probably takes years!

I am wondering if a really good male & female with good backgrounds would occasionally throw out a pet quality kit.
I ask as 2 very experienced people gave me a different answer.
One person said yes even a high quality pairing can throw out a pet quality kit & one person said a very firm no.

General Breeder Chat / On average how big are your best breeding females
« on: October 28, 2006, 08:11:45 AM »
I have to ask how big are your best breeding females & can we see some pics of them please.
Do you find that some of the kits they produce are the size of the male & some this size of the female?
Do you keep the largest female kit from the litter & breed from her when she is old enough or do the genetics mean that any of those kits have the ability to produce large kits?
I know you would not breed just for size & there are lots of other factors to consider but this is just a question about size. :)

I know occasionally one black velvet can appear in a otherwise pure standard 5 generation pedigree as it has been used to improve the standard by darkening it's coat.
So would you still class that chin as a pure standard & does that mean a white would occasionally be used to lighten a medium standards coat?

General Breeder Chat / Average size of males you use for breeding?

I am wondering what are the average size of your males which you use for breeding?

Conformation and Quality / Developing your eye
« on: October 26, 2006, 07:09:13 AM »
I am a novice at showing but watched at the shows I could get to for a couple of years & am enjoying developing my eye & learning all I can.
I am wondering if those who have shown for a while can tell me how long it takes to fully develop your eye & have the ability yourself to know which chin best compliments the other?

Conformation and Quality / How can you see red tinge on a white chin?
« on: October 24, 2006, 08:13:04 AM »
I have been reading through the article by Gary N & would like to know how you can see whether a white or beige chin has a red tint?
If anyone has a pic of one would they please post it?
Is the red tint the same as when a chin is tinged & has a brown tinge to the coat?
I know whites are supposed to be persil white & if they are creamy are off colour so am wondering if that would be classed as a red tint?
