I have a cold

It's a pretty bad one, too, so I don't want Doodle to catch it. What can chinchillas catch from humans?

Health / I think Snix is sneezing!

Snickerdoodle has been making a weird sound lately, like a sneeze. Also, he has sneezed on my face twice within the last month. I felt a burst of air from his nose on my face while he was sitting on me and heard a squeak. This has been happening more lately, maybe one or more times a week. I feel terrible for my poor boy, but he doesn't seem to mind. There are no other symptoms. Thanks to anyone who can give input!

When I put Snickerdoodle in his carrier for the weekly cleaning, he was calm for about 20 minutes (VERY unlike him). He barked 5 different times in those 20 minutes (he never barks like that except for when he's asleep and he was wide awake!). Why was this?

I've had Snickerdoodle for 1.5 years now, but I still don't understand the different noises he makes! Sometimes he sits on my back and barks gently in my ear. What does that vocalization mean?

My friend's guinea pig has mites. I washed my hands after handling her, but I was wondering: can chinchillas get mites? What are mites, anyway?

I found a weird bump on Snickerdoodle's belly. What could this be? I don't know for how long it has been there because he has only started letting me touch his belly in the last few months.

Snickerdoodle's missing fur grew back! He hasn't been chewing it, either! Is this the end of a terrible habit?

Q & A / guinea pigs and chinchillas

I am "babysitting" a guinea pig for the next 8 days (see my other post in "Other Pets"). I will be visiting his home 2- 3x a day to feed and play with him. What impact will this have on Snickerdoodle? I will be washing my hands between handling each animal, but do I need to change my clothing between holding them on my lap? The two different animals will not see eachother, but each will probably be aware that I am handling the other. Will this upset Snickerdoodle? The guinea pig seemed fine with it, but Snickerdoodle is picky. Please check out my other post about the guinea pig too; any advice is appreciated!

Other Pets / guinea pig help!

Passover is tonight, and a family I know is going away and asked if I could feed and play with their 4- month- old guinea pig for the 8 days that they're gone. I agreed. The thing is, because it is Passover and owning certain foods- even pet foods- is forbidden, they told me not to feed the guinea pig his regular food (it contains certain ingredients that are not allowed to be owned over Passover). Instead, I will be providing him with fresh fruits and vegetables. I know other guinea pig owners who have done this for Passover and the animals were fine. However, just in case, does anyone know of a wet- tail (is that what it's called?) remedy for guinea pigs? I can't use the burnt toast thing- bread is not allowed on Passover.
And any other tips and hints would be helpful! Thanks!

Health / Blood in the cage

Last Friday, we found dried blood on the food bowl. I looked at Snickerdoodle carefully but there was no apparent source of blood! Meanwhile, he has been gaining weight, which I am thrilled about- he has always been on the skinny side. What is going on?

Today, when Snix was sleeping, I put one finger in the cage to pet him. Instead of pushing me away, he fell asleep on my finger like it was a pillow! He's so cute <3

Snickerdoodle has been shedding a lot lately. I don't mean out of fear, because it's not huge tufts, but all over his body there seems to be loose fur. The fur chewing is also getting worse (he increased it by about an inch just yesterday alone). Please help

I gave Snickerdoodle 2 Cheerios and he was chewing them strangely. He opened his mouth more than usual to chew. Help! I can't take him to the vet because my mother won't let. Is there any way I can check his teeth?

What is the difference between black velvets and ebonies? Which tends to be more expensive?
I once went to Petland (bad idea to buy from them--- the chinchillas are cramped together and don't look healthy!!!) and saw a huge white chinchilla for $300. Why is that? Considering that he was from a pet store, I assume he wasn't so high quality (although he was tremendous!), but was the store trying to rip buyers off? Or are white chinchillas (what's the breeders' name for these?) more expensive in general?
