Whenever i reach my hand into my baby chinchillas section of the cage, she starts barking. However, when she smells my finger, she stops and tries to come out. When she comes out to play, she never barks. Does she not feel safe in her cage? My older chinchilla ,who is 1 years old, is right above her and they don't get along yet. What could she be barking at?

My oldest chin will bark sometimes when he hears sounds he's not familiar with. They have an alarm call much like squirrels do. Both of them were very vocal at night when I first got them. It may be a couple of weeks before he gets used to her new place and surroundings. They will bark to try to contact other chins.
My young chin will make astonishing noises in his sleep and when he yawns and stretches. At night he will make loud noises for no apparent reason at random times.
My older one is vocal when you handle him. He'll press his head into my hand hand make chirping sounds and I'll imitate him. But the younger one is always quiet when handled.
Chins are capable of making a wide range of sounds. Some I can figure out and some just seem to be for the heck of being noisy.

Thank you!! My older chin doesnt make that many sounds. Whenever she sees the cat, she barks. She does make squeaking sounds when she's playing though.

Be careful with cats. It's recommended that cat's don't have access to your chinchilla's cage in any way. Otherwise it is really at your own risk. Accidents can happen and if they do it can be fatal.

yes, my cats don't have access to my chins. However, sometimes they will follow me down. They brush their tails up against the cages and thats when she barks.

Makes sense. Chinchillas can sense predatory animals.
