Title: Standard chin - is he pure breed?
Post by: cuculet on September 18, 2012, 07:51:08 AM
Hello,

I read on the forums that you can never know if a chin is pure breed if you get it from the store. Is there anyway to tell if my chin is pure breed just from pictures?

Oh, and he is around 1 year and 2-4 months old from what the store told me. I had him for a year now and i think he is smaller from what i can see on the forums. Is he going to get bigger? (i like him like this :) )

Thank you
Dan

Chins usually are fully grown at a year although they can grow some for a few more months from what I understand so you're probably not going to see much of a change.
It is true you can't tell the purity of the line by looking. Some are carriers of mutation genes that don't express in the outward appearance. Sometimes you'll see signs of them if you know what you're looking for. The big problem with pet store chins is you don't know if they could be carrying congenital diseases so it's important you don't try to breed with this one. Looking at the photos he looks like a regular standard grey but I'm not expert on that.

Well, i'm not trying to breed. I was just curious if he is pure or not. :)
