Title: Pet Stores
Post by: Petco Chinchillas on May 21, 2009, 12:49:12 PM
What if a chinchilla is with a buddy at a pet store and you buy one. What if it gets lonely?  ::shrug:: I really don`t know what to do. All answers are excepted. ::clapp:: Thank you those who reply.

#1 ... That would depend on the chinchilla ... all chinchillas are different and have their own special personality ... each may react differently to the same situation.

#2 ... Do you know how old your chin is?  Usually the younger they are, the easier most can adapt.

#3 ... If you can give it special one-on-one time with you everyday, without fail, you will become it's buddy, it's family and it will depend on you for everything ... love, attention and fun.

#4 ... If you can not give it at least 30 minutes everyday where you spend one-on-one time with it ... without other distractions ... no book, no computer, no radio, no t.v., no visitors ... if you can not do this every day, without fail ... it will get lonely ... would you like that if you had to trade places with it?  Chinchillas have all of the emotions humans have ... treat it how you would like to be treated and he/she should be just fine.

#5 ... Is this other chinchilla a sibling?  Is it the same sex or a different sex than the one you are getting or now have?

Chinchillas are very social animals ... with each other and with humans.  They need love and attention, constantly.   ::nod::

Just my thoughts on the subject.   :::grins::

PS  I sent you an message ... will check back again later.

Thanks. I don`t have a chinchilla yet, :::((( but I was planning to get it from Petco. I may change my mind, though. They are housed together there. I will most likely get it somewhere else.  Just wondering how it would do alone. Thank you so much for the info. :::grins::

I would recomend going to a breeder. then you can have the background on the chinchilla....and they are more likely to know the sex then a pet store

I decided that I would get a chinchilla from a breeder. I read a website that said pet stores aren`t interested in looking for healthy friendly pets, they are looking for a profit.  :(I kinda didn`t want to believe it but I guess I have to.

The great thing about purchasing a chinchilla from a breeder is...You have a knowledgable person carring for your chinchilla. They aren't feeding it junk chinchilla food. And you can see the parents of the chinchilla which is sort of cool...and you can see several verses the two at the pet store...

Don't get me wrong...those deserve good homes to. But the benefits of purchasing from a breeder is HUGE compared to a pet store. They also have the history of the parents of the baby chin. They also sell adults sometimes...but if you get a young one...they are easier to litter train. [to urninate only in a litter pan] Which saves the trays of a cage from being soiled and erroded. And you can check personalities...We've two chins...the one was really hyper that my son picked out. And he's not into handling much...the other one liked to be held from the get go. So you can see there is a plus to that...also...breeders are cheaper than a pet store typically. You'll pay more for something other than a standard...but our breeder's Violets were what the pet store was asking for their standards...And they didn't have a clue at their age when we looked at them.

Don't forget to share pictures of your chin...We would love to see it. ::silly::

I really am not in to computer stuff :blush2: my cousin would have to help me with that. Although she thinks she`s way too old for me. :'( I am sure i can get her to come over though. It may take a long time.

::silly::  That's OK ... we have lots of patience ... that is one thing chinchillas strive to teach us humans ... patients.   :D   Do try to post a picture when you can, we'd love to see them, but there is no big rush.

My second chin was a Christmas gift for my kids.
I knew they were getting me one because I wanted to order in a female and everyone kept telling me to wait until after Christmas.
I came out Christmas morning and didn't see a cage or anything jumping.

::Hairraising::   " OK kids where is she?"  :D

They had her in a carrier in my daughters bedroom, and were really trying to surprise me, they did when I couldn't see a cage. :2funny:

::silly::  Yep!  I got my first two for my birthday in November ... many years ago ... and #3 & #4 for Christmas that same year ... I became a chinchilla addict quick ... by April, I had 20 and by the end of that year, I had 40.   :)    I now have 100, but at one time it got up to 200+.

::fruit::  I love the pitter-patter of little feet everywhere!   :blush2:

::silly::  No kidding ... 200+ ... I didn't let it say there long ... there was a bumper crop of babies that year and it was more than I wanted to have to handle ... that was several years ago.  Now that I have it back down to a manageable number ... and I'll keep it there.    ::nod::

What about adopting? Has that ever crossed your mind?  ;)

What do you mean by adopting.  Buying from a home that can`t support it?

Thanks for your answer, maybe I will remember that next time I plan on buying a chinchilla..... The pic on the left is of the one I got from the breeder.

::silly::  Adopting can mean many things when talking about chinchillas.   :)

I never referred to some one getting a chinchilla as me "selling" it or them "buying" it ... to me ... that sounds to much like things that are not living and will eventually get thrown away ...   :'(

 |hugs|  When someone would get a chinchilla from me, I had to make sure they really wanted it and would take good care of it ... and ... if they ever decided they could no longer care for it, it would come back to me ... my chinchillas were "adopted" as "new members of their family" ... a forever part of their family ... if I felt they did not feel the same way ... they could not have one of my little ones to take home with them.

::highfive::     Adopting is also a reference used when getting a rescue chin ... one that needs a new home because the current owner can no longer care for it properly.

:hugs:  Adopting is also a reference to a chinchilla that is given to you to care for because it has medical problems or a disability of some kind and needs special care.

::nod::  Adopting is getting a living thing that you really want and will care for it ... not something to show off, or brag about, or to make you "look" like a better person ... but something you will love, cherish and care for always ... something you have wanted for a long time and finly get.

At least, that's what adoption means to me.   :::grins::

::silly::  Thanks, Debbie ...  :blush2: ... but ... you have helped us all so many times ... you have a real devotion to chinchillas that is rare ... your information is always invaluable.   |hugs|

There are many that contribute ... some more often than others ... but each contribution stands on it's on value ... every chinchilla is loved by each of us because it is special to us ... there's no two alike ... so every story, need, and/or comment that is made, helps more than just the one person that is asking.  Someone that may have been to shy to ask, may have the same problem, and need the same help ... we may never know it ... but they do.   :::grins::

It takes all of us to make a good forum ... each question ... each answer ... opens new doors for us ...

If it were not for the questions ... how would we know we needed to look for the answer?

 ::howdythere::  Jo Ann

NOTE: The one person that we need to appreciate the most, is the owner of the site, Jamie ... if it were not for her we would not have a site to go to.  She pays out her own money to keep the site on line.   If that's not devotion, I don't know what is.   ::nod::
