General Chat / Re: do chinchillas attack sick chinchillas?
« on: February 18, 2015, 08:55:57 AM »
It is possible that the animal that died, actually died from shock or heart attack due to shock and not the injuries. People don't realize how fragile these animals can be. It is rare, but it does happen.

Little story - when I first got into breeding years ago, I put a new female in with a male. I was in the room watching them because at that time I just had one other pair of animals and I watched everything (unlike now when the use of runs is amazing and I leave them be). The male was curious and went up to the female and cacked at her. She went into straight shock and died 10 minutes later. I honestly believe she had a heart attack because she just didn't understand what was going on - she'd never had another chin cack at her and was scared out of her mind. No injuries whatsoever, just total shock.

Chins don't always get along, even after being together for a decade. Fights do happen and are sometimes unavoidable.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Q & A / Re: Good afternoon.. Just wondering.
« on: February 15, 2015, 02:49:56 PM »
Each chinchilla has a different personality. Some are more easy going than others.

I normally suggest taking the particular chinchilla out and putting him in a small area where you can sit down with him. Don't force the animal to come to you.. maybe give a small treat to see if he will learn to come to you. Talk to him, play music so he can get used to the human voice. It takes quiet a bit of time, but forcing yourself on him normally doesn't work. Let him jump onto you and smell you, figure out who you are and try it maybe once a day. Don't expect it to happen overnight though. Good luck.

Conformation and Quality / Re: Beige and an ebony
« on: September 05, 2010, 11:31:01 PM »
Wow... I just got on here to get a more of an opinon, and to learn. I really don't need responses that don't help. As I have gotten diffrent answers from other people. My goal isn't to breed show chins. Just chins that are a good quality. As my local petstore buys my standards from me. And it would be nice to have other colors. And I read that a mutation to a mutation was not a great idea. So I was not sure after reading that if I should separate my two or not. I tried to post pic earlier today, but I don't have good internet.

If you're going to breed, then you should breed to the show standard. "Good quality" chinchillas are show quality chinchillas. Breeding for colors or "cute babies" is absolutely pointless, it depletes the vigor in the gene pool. There is no reason to produce pet only quality chinchillas because you'd be ruining what responsible breeders and ranchers have worked so hard to achieve.

You were given an opinion, just an opinion you didn't want to hear. Please think about what you're doing and listen to those with experience.

As far as breeding beige and ebony together - you want animals that compliment each other, regardless of mutation. Whether it be standard to standard or mute to mute, you don't want to put two lacking qualities together as you take a risk at intensifying that trait and making it even worse. When mating multiple mutations, you take the risk of losing size and quality in your animals if you dont add quality standards into the lines every other generation. You have to be careful when pairing mutes, as you want to improve on their mutation, not decrease the quality in the mutation just for a hybrid color. If both animals are already lacking size, then they both need to be complimented to larger animals to keep size in the lines. I would personally suggest showing your animals so that you know how to compliment them.

Breeding 101 / Re: Can chinchilas have miscarriages???
« on: August 03, 2010, 11:04:16 AM »
Just because you've had a pair together since November doesn't mean that the female has to be pregnant in that time. I've had pairs take over 2 years to get pregnant, some that have never gotten pregnant. Females CAN "miscarry", but they reabsorb the fetus, they don't actually expel it.

Breeding 101 / Re: growth and sizes in kits...
« on: August 02, 2010, 09:23:53 PM »
Kits grow at different rates, regardless of gender. Same with adults - you may have a kits 100g+ in difference from the same litter. Not all males are smaller than females either. There are plenty of large males out there.

Q & A / Re: a salt and mineral wheel?
« on: August 02, 2010, 09:19:55 PM »
No, chinchillas do not need salt or mineral wheels. Nor do they need to be overloaded with treats. I do not purchase any treats at pet stores - stick to dried rosehips, cheerios, shredded wheats, apple sticks and oats. Treats are to be used in MODERATION.

I love chins but I am in a tough spot now I dont have any experience with breeding but the opprotunity to have a female mosaic and male ebony but I also have the opprounity to own two beautiful females too! I love chins and Id love to learn I just wanted to know what you guys think!

Mickey, I hope you realize that you signed a contract with me stating that these "two beautiful females" were not to be bred, no exceptions. They are both pet quality and I did not give you their pedigrees for this reason. I just want to reiterate this before the thought crosses your mind. It scares me to read that you are possibly considering a breeding pair so early on, as this was posted before you even picked up the girls. You really need to spend the time learning the ins and outs of these animals as pets before thinking about breeding.

Memorials / Re: Chinchilla in a Locket

Donna, those are very sweet words you spoke to Billy. He was well taken care of and couldn't have had a better chin mom. May the sweet guy rest in peace and in your heart for all eternity.

General Chat / Re: Ferret Hammock
« on: February 25, 2010, 01:05:44 AM »
Most ferret hammocks can be easily chewed through. The straps to hold them up are really thin. I've changed my hammock designs over the years to make them more comfortable for chins. Some use them, some don't.

South East USA / Re: South Carolina Show...Who is interested?
« on: August 27, 2009, 02:48:35 PM »
I'm pretty interested in it. I don't mind helping out whatsoever. I have 8 or so extra show bulbs if anyone has the setup. I'm sure I have a few chins I could show and I could try to draw some interest also.
