ok so it's either between FN142 or feisty ferret home. I really like the feisty ferret home because the tray is below the wire and that's where I like to put bambi's bedding, I don't like the fact that FN 142 has the tray above the wire, that means bambi would have a change to eat the bedding. which cage do you think i should buy? If any of you guys have one of the cage, is FN 142 really that good/strong and is Feisty Ferret Home really that weak?

Hi guys, I'm thinking of getting a new cage for my chinchilla and i really like the Feisty Ferret Cage. Here's a link to it. http://www.futurepets.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=PR485 I thought the cage was perfect for my chinchilla but Jean just told me that it will break if I put a wheel on it. I have a flying saucer that i bought from Quality cage and i would love to put it in Bambi's new home. What do you guys think I should do? Or do you know any cage that's about the same price/size?

I don't think a chinchilla would come to you if you call him (like a dog). What I did is that i spent a lot of time next to his cage and just talk to him...like hii bambi, how are you? blah blah blah hehe then i would open the cage door and let him come out as he please. I never put my hand into his cage and force him to come to me...well I did once and he bit me until i bleed. My chinchilla would come the door and i would give him an oat in return. Sometimes i'd pet him once or twice until he run away but i never go after him. It's been a year now and we bonded pretty well. Whenever I sleep next to his cage he would come out and go under the blanket and climb all over me, sometimes he would sleep there

I have the same problem =[ Bambi's feet are red and it's dry. I have no idea why. I cover most of his cage floor so his feet doesn't really touch the wires, only when he needs to pee, his "toilet" is not covered. And I let him take his bath about 2/3 times a week. Help pls!

you should also check yourself once a month, a hair ring caught on their penis can be dangerous.

oh my gosh that chinchilla is super cute haha he was just sitting there and let her do a hair ring check. My boy would always try to jump. Like 10 times per hair ring check.

Everytime I let my chinchilla out to play, i would always cover my wires with a blanket, since I have them all in 1 place. I move all the plugs up so my chinchilla can't reach it. And for furnitures and other things, I have watch him to make sure he doesn't chew on them. He kinda stopped chewing on them now. Everytime he chew or do something I don't like I would yell "no bambi!" and I think he learned what that means, since he hear me say that everyday. 8/10 times he stop doing it when I yell at him. You can try teaching him that? And make sure he has a lot of chew toys in his cage so when he come out he won't be hungry for chewing.

Health / Pawing at mouth??

I was doing some research and I've read that pawing at mouth is a sign of illness. So i was wondering what does pawing at mouth look like? Because my chinchilla does that a lot but I thought he was just cleaning his mouth...since he usually does it after he eat or when he's doing his usual cleaning routine (biting paw/fur/cratching his back). He would put 2 front paws on his mouth and then wipe them down to his chest. When he does that, it's usually 2-3 times in a row. Each time, he would turn a little bit to make sure that he get the other side of his mouth. I'm not sure if that's pawing at the mouth. Everything else is normal, he's active and is eating his food, stool is normal, teeth are yellow/orange.

When I first got my chin, people there never say anything about not using one of the other so I don't think it's such a big deal..? As long as you don't give it water that are not purified. Distillation is one of many way to purify water. But purified water might have different minerals that naturally exist in the water. They are both the same except one have minerals and one don't. Hmm maybe someone will have a complete answer. I also have a similar question...I give my chin Aquafina water, and people said aquafina is tap water...so should I keep giving him aquafina or no?

Q & A / Normal Hay vs. Hay cubes?

Hi guys! I have been feeding my chinchilla normal hay, but he always push it away to his peeing area and then I would have to throw them away everyday. I was thinking of feeding him hay cubes instead of normal hay, but I am not sure if the hay cubes is 100% good. I mean...the normal hay seems to be more natural. Will hay cubes be a good replacement of normal hay? Do chinchillas like one more than the other? Advice please

haha mine does that too. He is just cleaning it. And for hair rings, someone told me it should be checked once a month when i got my chinny. If you catch him doing it, you can just look close to see if there is hair ring so you don't have to pull his thing out, he won't like it I always check it that way, but I do check for hair ring myself once in a while, just to double check.
It's always funny to tease him when he does that haha me and my sister were like ewww bambi eww, and he would just stand there and keep doing it

It took me about 6 months to bond with my 5 yr old chinchilla, with me sleeping next to his cage every single day But he is still scared of me when he's inside his cage. When I take him to play in the bathroom, he also climb all over me like your chinchilla does. When he's back in this cage, he didn't let me touch him. It's been almost a year now and he let me touch him, only like 50% of the time though. Most chinchillas don't like to be held, so it is not strange for yours to leap away from your arms. My boy does that everytime. When I touch him I don't usually hold him, he would stand there and let me do it. I trained him by giving him treat everytime he let me pet him (i use oats because they are small so that I can give him more than one a day) But he would get scared if I try to pick him up or hold him. Well that was my bonding story. So I think you guys are just in your bonding process, don't worry you will get to scratch him behind his ears eventually!

The only solution to preventing flies is to clean the cage better and more frequentlyStop refering and criticizing what I said. yea i get it you would never use anything that I use, cookie, carefresh, etc. because it is super bad. She said she think the fly breed in organic thing so i was trying to help by suggesting inorganic stuff. Gosh i was just trying to help, no need to go after and attack thing that i said. Obviously you replied after I post my comment about carefresh but not jean's (which also mentioned carefresh) And this is not the first time...

As a matter of fact, yes i did. They are made of oats, wheat bran, rolled barley, cane molassas, and apples. so please...if anything is bad, it's the raisins, and people still use raisins as treats. It is the first treats I was introduced to when i adopted my chinchilla at a rescue, how can people there be so mean telling me to give my chinchilla a horrible treat?
And jmdebb (jean) in our forum sells it on her store, and she has great knowledge about chins and is helping with rescues so i trust her enough to believe that she's not going to sell bad treats to harm all the chinchillas. And there you have the reason why I give him horse treats. fyi he's been healthy for 7 years with people giving him those treats.

You shouldn't buy treats at pet store, most of them are unhealthy...like the crackers and raisins. I personally like giving my chin 20 oats throughout the day than giving him one big chunk of sugary raisin, which last less than 1 minute.
