Health / Re: Urgent: How to gain weight?

You dont want to rush weight gain. A good pellet and hay along with time is what he needs right now

Q & A / Re: Training treats and amounts
« on: December 31, 2016, 10:06:42 PM »
Chinchillas need a plain diet with little to no variation. Treats should be given sparingly and infrequently. 1-2 per week. Many websites and owners say giving treats often are fine but as a matter of personal experience and several other breeders, we have found less is more. Chins do not need treats, they are often given more for out enjoyment than the chins. I have 'trained' my chins using hay cubes and wooden chews. Those items are not really treats but my chins think they are cause its something i handed to them

Q & A / Re: Are my chinchillasreally pregnant?
« on: December 27, 2016, 06:22:33 PM »
There is no way to know for sure unless you feel kits kicking or see kits in the cage. Even after breeding 9 yrs i still get a surprise litter from time to time

Standing up means they feel threatened and are very defensive. The kacking is a them showing disgust and telling the other chin to leave them alone. Chasing and or pulling out the other chins fur is them openly attacking, so not a good sign. I would personally stop the intro before one of them gets hurt. They are giving you clear signals that they dislike each other

Q & A / Re: Chinchilla has small poop
« on: December 25, 2016, 11:25:07 PM »
The diet you listed is very unhealthy which can explain the small poops. Chins should have plain pellets, hay and water. No nuts, greens, seeds or yogurt. It upsets their GI tract and can actually lead to death eventually. I would advise weighing your chin to check for any losses

Q & A / Re: Can pregnant sisters stay together?

Can you tell what kind of wood that is made of? Many commercial cages are made of cedar which is not good for chins

Q & A / Re: Getting new friend(s) for my 14 year old chin.

You will want to wait a minimum of a month before bringing a new chinchilla into your house. Thats to ensure there is nothing contagious relating to the others death.

With his age and obvious temperament he may not ever accept a new chinchilla as a cage mate. Chins can be very picky whom they choose to get along with. You can get another chin to be caged separately but in the same room so he can talk to another but not have to deal with them directly. I would advise a male buddy rather than a female. Even though he is neutered the hormones still affect them.

An easier fix would be to get him a chin safe stuffed animal to cuddle with. That way you dont have to worry about another cage and them possibly not getting along

Q & A / Re: Hemp Bedding
« on: December 06, 2016, 08:26:09 PM »
I personally would not use it since im not familiar with it. If you have a wire bottom cage and the chin can not reach the bedding then it would be worth a try. I use pine or aspen wood shavings

Some chins can be left together and others can not. Its a risk and would require careful monitoring from you if you choose to keep them paired. Another note, they can dust as usual. There is no need to wait 10 days. Thats an old piece of misinformation. I will often dust during labor to help the kits drop for a quicker birth.

General Chat / Re: Chinchilla licking her self
« on: December 03, 2016, 10:11:41 AM »
Dampness by her vaginal area can be a sign of her cycling. If there is an odor or color to the discharge then i would be concerned. Is her chin wet as well?
Honestly a yearly vet visit is a waste of your money. Its extremely stressful to your chin which in its self can lead to issues (stasis, bloat, parasites, upper resp...). Chins should only leave the house on an as needed basis.

Canada / Re: Mating my female chinchilla
« on: November 24, 2016, 10:09:02 PM »
You sound like you need to do a lot more research. Chins should not be bred unless they are pedigreed, shown and paired to improve the next generation. Breeding can be costly. A c-section can easily cost $2000. If a kit is rejected or milk doesnt come in, that means hand feeding every 2 hrs for 8 weeks. Will your job allow that? Are you familiar with common genetic issues that your chin can be carrying? Malo, kidney failure, heart murmurs, fur chewing and others which greatly shorten a chinchillas life.

Q & A / Re: Vacation
« on: November 16, 2016, 08:08:47 PM »
Personally i would dust the chins before you leave and wait till you return to dust. The less your pet sitter has to do the less chance of an issue. Ive seen chins die or get loose due to mistakes from a pet sitter. I dust my chins once a week so they will be fine to wait 6 days

General Chat / Re: Chinchilla rejects fresh fruit
« on: October 29, 2016, 10:17:40 AM »
You also are forgetting the cactus only bear fruit once a yr and in very limited quantities (during the rainy time). With all the local animals trying to get the fruit, very few are actually eaten by chins.

Scales are great to have to monitor health. Unfortunately though teeth issues are rarely curable, so don't feel bad about not noticing it sooner
