Title: hes vibrating?
Post by: sarahlydear on February 15, 2010, 12:07:37 PM
ok my chin has randomly start chattering his teeth(kinda like when we are cold) and vibrate. he does it when im petting him, hes sitting around, visiting my mom, any time any where, there doesnt seem to be any pattern! Sometimes he does sometimes he doesnt, is he purring, mad? he shouldnt be scared theres nothing new around and hes more than willing to escape to explore whatevers around. i dont think hes mad because sometimes he'll start doing it and then come over and start grooming me. we've had him for almost 3months now and he just started doing it and i have no idea!

I've seen them do this before when they are happy.  You just may be a chinchilla whisperer!

I have always called that one the shiver. <most do it when scared or your doing something they don't like, holding them the wrong way etc........
But I have one that still does it sometimes and he has never been afraid, he's my first.
I have a theory that in the wild if they were to do that, their predators would think the same as we did,"what he this thing doing" and be confused long enough for the chin to make a break.
Just my theory mind you, but I watched Pokie my first do it often, and only does it now if I'm holding him and he wants down. I just tell him I'm to smart for that trick. :D

this is a new one for me.. over four years i've had them and i never heard of that.. sounds kind of funny hearing a chin chattering his teeth.

well it wasnt really a loud sound it was just the best analogy i could think of, but now he's started to grind his teeth and im not really sure what that means, because it is a sound and it seems kinda akward.

Yeah, Tia grinds her teeth when I pet her... I don't know what it means. She's still getting used to me. I've read that grinding their teeth can mean feeling content or angry... so... I don't know.  :-\

They can really chatter their teeth when they are mad. I only hear that when putting new pairs together. It's kind of a " Back Off or I'll attack" thingy LOL
I'll say aaa none of that and they will stop. LOL
