I have a question is a 12inch flying saucer an ok size or should I get bigger one

12" is terrible for a regular wheel and can cause orthopedic injury. 14" is okay for small chinchillas. 15" or higher is recommended.
I have a 14" regular wheel (silver surfer) and it is good for my 500g male although expert breeders may say 14" is too small. I would have to agree for chins much larger than mine.
For a flying saucer I think it wouldn't be unsafe but I think it would be unusable for anything but a growing kit. And a growing chinchilla probably shouldn't have constant access to an exercise wheel.
A good wheel is going to be metal (and sometimes also wood) construction. Plastic accessories are unacceptable for chins IMO.

Turns out that the IKEA parts make it yourself wheel is absolutely brilliant. I'm no macguyver, but I managed to use super super glue, and I glued some pieces of wood together to make an incline, and glued the lazy susan on top of it.
AND IT WORKED.
But then it broke after a few months.
Then I did another, which also broke.
But now is my 3rd one, and it is doing very well! No problems whatsoever even months later.
