Health / Long Poop
« on: March 05, 2014, 02:58:36 PM »
Chinchilla just pooped extremely long poop about 3-4 times bigger than pellets and its just one big long one. Should i try with burnt toast or something if just an upset tummy. Still recovering from last vet visit so hope doesn't come to that.

Finally got bottle cleaner a week ago so water bottle should be clean. Give about half a raisin a day maybe.

Q & A / Destroying pellets
« on: March 05, 2014, 09:31:32 AM »
Ever since i got a new bag of Oxbow pellets it seems they always get destroyed and its full of dust and crumbles. Now that my 2 chinchillas are separated for another reason  i notice its the one the was recently at the vet a month ago. This chinchilla never use to do this and its also wasting my pellets more than usual. Is there a reason he may be doing this. They get chew sticks daily.

Health / Chinchilla Diet
« on: February 13, 2014, 12:33:09 AM »
Since my chinchilla is now all better from recovery from bladder stone i know i need to change his diet to hope it doesn't happen again. Once he gets it once its more likely to happen again.
As of now they just get unlimited Timothy hay and Oxbow pellets. Also about half a raisin a day usually.
There are 2 chinchillas both a year and a half.

Read online can try american health pellets.
http://www.americanpetdiner.com/product/timmy-guinea-pig-and-chinchilla-pellets/
Since its just timothy hay can help with that. Think i should go ahead and try this new food?
Or suggest anything else.

Health / Easy way to tell if chinchilla is peeing
« on: February 01, 2014, 07:42:26 PM »
I need to monitor my chinchilla to make sure hes peeing and pooing. Luckily he started pooping again and peed some since vet but extremely little. As for last 24 hour im not for sure mostly i figure how small amount he'd pee might go away before id see it. Vet suggested papers but he'd prob just eat ton of it maybe. Cant use carefresh since might stick to him.

Right now its just plastic floor and little cloth of fleece. Also theirs hay on the floor.
Worst is when gotta work since cant check for 8 hours

Secondly is an other suggestions to keep him hydrated and fed. Hes on 4 different medicines at the moments twice a day(figured alot liquid there). Ima go pick up some pedialyte now. Ive given him very little water through syringe. Hes eaten a tiny amount of critical care (his choice). Also he has 2 packs still of water attached to him i dont know what you call his to help keep him hydrated.

Any suggestion i haven't covered to help be helpful. Right now not really anymore a vet can do just hope he heals and all works out.

« on: February 24, 2013, 05:04:48 PM »

Health / Jammed Foot
« on: December 17, 2012, 02:11:07 PM »
This isn't about my chinchilla so don't know all the details. But the chinchilla jumped off her shoulder and fell on the floor and is missing a foot already on the front leg. Don't know how the foot is missing the foot its how they got him but now its messed up. It seems like it might be jammed, It could even be broken since the leg is already weird hard to tell if isn't normal without a x-ray. He seems to keep trying to like put his leg out and walk on it but when he does it keeps falling back. If it were to be jammed would it be better in a few days read some if isn't to bad not broken can get better in a few days.

Was wondering if anyone had any tips to tell. It keeps falling back looks bad but maybe its good thing if trying get back to normal or bad and should just leave it i dont know.

Also in terms a vet she would love too but don't really have money she said might ask her mom to take back her xmas gifts so can go to vet since will need x-rays and stuff if comes to it so trying to avoid that.

Thanks for any help

Q & A / Chinchilla Wheel
« on: November 07, 2012, 11:43:43 PM »
I just got the Chinspin for my birthday and was wondering some things about them. Its 15 inch.

1. Should they only use it for a small amount of time as they are only about 5 months old

2. If only want them using it during day for sound and know can stunt their growth so i jam something in back my old lava ledge so cant move is that ok. Since taking in and out daily will be massive pain.

Q & A / Herbs to eat
« on: October 11, 2012, 04:09:14 PM »
The vet apertally gave my chinchilla some basil and thyme. Remember reading in book in wild that they eat like 24 different plants in the wild. So was wonder what is safe for them to eat and could you give them some greens as like treat or something. My brother grew some herbs and has plenty of basil would it be good for chinchillas or just stick to hay and pellets only with occasional treat. Ask since know most vets aren't chinchillas experts.

Q & A / Bedding

I know few people have said they don't use carefresh and don't suggest it. So was wondering what do they use instead pine?

Health / Is there way to reinsure my chinchilla
« on: October 04, 2012, 07:03:55 PM »
My sick chinchilla is spending the night at the vet tonight and going into surgery tomorrow and then spending that night for them to watch him. Will not get him back till Saturday essentially 2 nights. My other fine chinchilla has become so lively the past week or so and if open the cage i can barely close he'll jump on my hand when try to push back. Few hours after got home alone he started making squeaking sounds. Hes just laying on the floor and when opened the door he barely wanted to move or come out.

All he knows is his brother wasn't doing well possibly dying without help and now is gone somewhere, he doesn't know his brother is coming back so might feel the worse and be sad because of it feeling he has lost his brother.

Ill try to bond with him but just now when tried to even touch him he ran away wouldn't let me get close. Is there anything else i can do to keep him happy and not stressed till his brother comes home?

Health / Chins Poop
« on: September 27, 2012, 11:04:41 PM »
One of my chinchilla's has been stressed going to vet and loseing one of its toe and all. Ive kept him seprated and noticed his poop is smaller than normal, I forgot to mention it to vet last time i was in and wont be back for hopefully last time till next Thursday. I know it fairly normal for it to be differnt under such stress but is there a time it should stop and go back to normal and how long to should start really worrying is isnt back to normal like week etc. Thanks in advance

Q & A / Safe Fleece? and is it 100% polyester
« on: September 25, 2012, 04:51:27 PM »
I got ramp cover for my ferret nation cage and never used since saw polyester is bad for them but found these
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=23904&rel=1
which look just like what i have. Read online that fleece is made from polyester. So will this ramp cover be safe. Fyi i removed 2 of the ramps since not needed and safer but i still need the one in middle to separate the bottom and top which makes cleaning alot easier, which is done daily can close it with latch and use to make 2 cages to keep separate like am doing now. Since the covers will cover the wire mesh ramp which probably isn't the safest for them.

Q & A / Cone on Chinchilla
« on: September 22, 2012, 11:51:55 PM »
Has anyone had to have a cone on there chinchilla for any reason. If so is there any tips you could give like them eating i can hand feed kinda but he doesn't want to eat too much from that. If i take off the cone he'll eat for bit and then go for his wound, and im bad at putting it back on =).

Health / Chinchillas Foot Has Blood On It
« on: September 20, 2012, 11:25:31 PM »
While I had them in the bathroom noticed one of my chinchillas has a bloody foot. I just cleaned there cage before hand and didn't notice anything. I checked my new litter box and see nothing now  that could cut it. Do have one of those edible hut's which they walk on and some inside parts aren't smooth but not of i see also is red itself. Is there anything i need to do about it when i saw it looked already dried. Just got them a week ago so maybe just not use to cage and new items and hurt self while jumping around. Haven't seen then seriously fight of i know of. While running around in bathroom he didn't seem any different he was still jumping around on my shoulder, sink and all just like his brother. He isnt limping looks all the same other then the red on his foot. These my first chinchillas so know wouldnt be able to look closely at the foot easily, trying to lift upside down etc but can if think i should. Was able to take a somewhat good picture. Any advice be appreciated thanks =). Also all the levels are flat for them to sit.
