General Breeder Chat / Runt care
« on: April 04, 2012, 12:11:55 AM »
Our 3-year-old female had triplets yesterday. Two weighed in at 40 grams and are active and healthy looking with eyes open (and maintained their birth weight today). The other (2nd born) only weighed in at 20 grams and had his eyes shut. I left all 3 in with mom as she seemed to be caring for them all, but discovered the runt left on its own this morning, cold and lethargic. I've been keeping it warm and syringe feeding today, as well as putting him back in with mom for short durations to try to reestablish nursing. Eyes opened today and he is starting to get around, and I was able to get mom to successfully nurse tonight. Now I have a couple questions, though: 1) How much time can I afford to put the runt in with mom/siblings before worrying about it getting too cold if she isn't interacting with him. 2) Do often do I reintroduce the two for nursing attempts vs. syringe feeding.
