Q & A / Re: Repairing chinchillas
« on: July 14, 2018, 02:10:01 AM »
You are strongly advised not to put them back together at any time once this behaviour has been observed. Clearly, they are indicating that they are not compatible and if you did try to reintroduce them, injury or death could very easily ensue.

To be blunt, chinchillas should not be fed fruit or veg, fresh or dried at all. Raisins are high in sugar, which a chinchilla cannot process, and the texture of a raisin can lead to serious teeth issues. Are you feeding your chinchilla a guinea pig pellet? If so, please change to a chinchilla pellet asap. It would be better to give your chinchilla a bland diet of good quality hay and fresh water for two or three days, while you sort out the correct pellets.

Chinchillas should not be given paper based bedding of any type. If ingested, it can swell, subsequently causing blockages and fatality.

Chinchillas should really not be given raisins as the sugar content is too high. Chins are seriously at risk regarding health from being fed sugary treats!!

Age and hormones. He's simply becoming aware of his sexuality.

I feel your pain. I've just lost a beloved chin to root elongation. He was only two, and a rescue chin. The pain I'm feeling is horrendous. This sweet little boy had a short life, but at least he knew love for part of it. He was an abuse case initially.

Q & A / Re: Chinchilla has small poop

I'm not sure you should be giving your chin nuts. This is a massive no no here in the U.K. When you say mixed greens, are you referring to veg, or chin safe forage?

Regarding sand baths, not out of cage exercise. There is no reason for the chins to miss out on their bathing routine.

Get your pet sitter to keep your chins in exactly the same routine as usual. Is there any need for deviation?

We have a menagerie of pets. Three guinea pigs, a rabbit, a cat, an African Pygmy dormouse, a yellow sided conure, a ferret and seventeen beautiful chinchilla boys. I was raised surrounded by animals and largely prefer them to people.

So glad your little chin is ok. Heat and humidity are a pure dread of mine and it rarely gets over 23 degrees here.

At what temperature was your room when the seizure occurred? Was he in his cage, or was he out exercising? Have you tried a dehumidifier to help with a raised humidity? Fans will not actually cool a chinchilla as they cannot sweat, nor should they be turned directly onto your cage as they can cause eye issues for your chin.

Health / Re: Fleas?
« on: July 07, 2016, 11:53:32 AM »
A chinchilla's fur is too dense to allow fleas to penetrate and reach the skin. Sand baths are really all that a pet chinchilla will need to keep their coat in good condition.

General Chat / Re: GUIDE: How to determine good Timothy Hay
« on: July 07, 2016, 06:43:46 AM »
All my chinchillas are fed Beaphar Care Plus pellets and a good quality Timothy hay as staple. As mb30 states, they are about the best to be obtained here in England. Each evening I feed a small amount of chin safe herbs or forage which all my boys love. All my chins are excellent weights and full of vitality. I'm extremely interested in natural, or near natural feeding and have read quite widely on what herbs etc are chin safe. My boys particulaly love echinacea, plantain, mulberry leaves, various safe wood bark, coneflower and many others. I give alfalfa twice weekly in small quantity, always mindful of the higher calcium levels it contains.

Would any other members interested in natural feeding please post their methods or research as I feel in would be beneficial to share  :).
