I'm really sorry to hear this, and I truly feel for both you and your chin. Please would you post again with the details, as this can be of great help to other chin owners in the same situation.

All I can suggest is that you keep watch for any of the teeth related symptoms, weepy eyes, drool, mouth pawing and much quieter, lethargic behaviour. Maybe another set of x-rays done by a chinchilla specific vet may help.

I still feel that the issue is teeth related. Have you had bloodwork carried out to rule out any infection or organ problems? Is your chinchilla still eating hay in normal quantity?

The minor irregular misalignment is the worrying thing. Spurs on teeth are in most cases secondary to something else going on with teeth. Did either vet mention root extension/elongation? I can't view the x-rays for some reason. Can you repost them?

Health / Re: Chinchillas near rabbits? Help!
« on: October 25, 2018, 04:37:24 AM »
Yes, they need to be in totally separate rooms and quickly! You really cannot afford to take any chances. You should not be using the same equipment for both species. Both chin's and rabbit's items need to be totally separated, as with feed.

General Chat / Re: My chinchilla is still afraid of me!

Some chinchillas never accept handling or direct interaction, so please be prepared for this to possibly be the case with yours. You are doing everything to the best of your capability so please don't beat yourself up. If your girl is anxious when out of her cage, then try not letting her out for several weeks and see if this may help. It is not essential that chins have regular out of cage exercise. Try building up the relationship with her from scratch, making slow movements inside her cage, for example picking up and replacing her toys, food bowl eats, while totally ignoring her and see if this helps. Please let us know how you get on.

Your chinchilla is not in a good way. From what you have described, the question I would ask myself is ' Is it fair to keep this chinchilla going?'' Quality of life in compromised, chinchillas love to run and jump, yours cannot, nor can he feed himself correctly. I believe that issues are occurring with your chinchilla that are, as yet, diagnosed, ref the weight issue. I think it is now time to ask yourself what is best for your chin.

Excess fat in a chin's diet can have a detrimental effect on liver function, especially in an older chinchinlla!

Nuts and sunflower seeds should NOT be given to chinchillas due to the high fat content! Has your vet carried out x-rays to check for any fractures or broken bones. A prolapsed prnid is generally an indication of pain.

You state that your chin has ongoing dental problems. Did you have x-rays done? Was there any indication of root elongation? I would surmise that this is more likely the cause of your chinchilla not being able to eat and drink. Please be very careful when stringing water as if your chin inhales any, pneumonia can rapidly develop.

It sounds like freckling, which is quite normal. Can you post pics?

Are you sure the discolouration is not freckling that occurs naturally in certain mutations with age. What mutation is your chinchilla?
